I hadn’t heard that one in a long time 😆 I used to have fun with it sometimes because Americans don’t know what it means.

Reminds me of a Elder on my mission that was from South Africa (I never asked him about race issues and this was while apartheid was still going on there).

Anyway he saw a person with a Garfield the cat t-shirt that said, “get stuffed” and to him that was saying “Get Pregnant”. Which I guess is what BYU teaches, but wait at least an hour after you are married.

He also one time walked into a Christian bookstore because his pencil eraser was worn out and he wanted one of those erasers that you stick on over the older one. He used the word he was used to using in South Africa and asked, “Do you have any rubbers?” He was puzzled when the girl behind the counter was taken back and said, “NO SIR! We do NOT and WILL not carry those.”

    😆 Nice stories!

I think it was Elder Nelson who gave a talk once on the law of the fast. Talking about the law of the fast as opposed to the act of fasting itself, it is exactly as we do it – giving money saved from not eating to the poor.

You may be thinking of his talk on Self-Mastery:

    Quote:

Another step toward self-mastery comes when you are old enough to observe the law of the fast. As funds are contributed from meals missed, the needs of the poor may be met. But meanwhile, through your spirit, you develop personal power over your body’s drives of hunger and thirst. Fasting gives you confidence to know that your spirit can master appetite.

…although I think that was used as an example of self-discipline but targeting a different physical appetite we should battle to control  ..lots of good applications I guess.

Sometimes I wish we practiced lent. Sometimes I need to practice giving up drinking Dr Pepper for a while, and make sure I’m not addicted to anything in this life…I should be willing to give up anything and be spiritually in control.

Fasting can remind me of that. Even though I get hungry, I remind myself why I’m doing it. Other fast Sundays i just think: “I could do it if I wanted to…but I don’t really want to this time.” And that helps me stay in control spiritually instead of fearing I must conform to what everyone else is doing.

Drink water, don’t drink water…regardless of how you do it…it is the internal conversation you’re having about it that matters, IMO.

Amex used to do leadership retreats with this group that did what I called “a Whitman’s sampler of western thought”: whirling meditations, Reiki massage, re-birthing activity, etc. Anyway, one of the evenings of the 2nd retreat they explained that we were going to do a “fast.” We had eaten a big lunch, and we were only skipping dinner, and having breakfast again the next day. I thought, “easy peasy,” and then they said there would be fresh fruit left out to snack on during the fast and juices and waters as well. There were actually a few people who weren’t sure they were going to make it! I was like, “Uhm, y’all are lightweights. Lightweights!!”

Actually get stuffed is on the vulgar side of get pregnant (more like the definition of a sadly common American vulgarity).

I do recall the first time I heard rubber as a missionary. It was a young girl (about 6 or 7) who asked if we wanted to see her rubber collection!

Uh…I just call that having a long day and forgetting dinner.

OK, granted, I usually wake up hungry and eat a can of tuna about 3AM or something like that, but I’ve also just rolled over and gone back to sleep after adjusting the alarm 20 minutes early so I can hit McD’s before work.
