GuestI wish Joseph Smith was alive to answer these questions: 1. Is there a difference between the feeling associated with the Holy Ghost and the Light of Christ?
2. Why have all “prophet, seers, and revelators” been silent since the death of Joseph Smith? (and I mean the type of revelations that Joseph received: books, revelations to friends, and answers to questions that are received and recorded as revelations )?
3. Is there a line between those behaviors we can choose to avoid (don’t lie, don’t be envious, avoid pride, be unselfish, sacrifice, kindness) and those, many would argue, we cannot chose to avoid (homosexuality, ADHD, Bi-Polar, depression)?
4. Why don’t we follow King Benjamin’s teachings that church leaders should not be paid for their services as church leaders?
5. Why do Book of Mormon characters often speak about the what the Lord “said” or “spoke” to them and we are left with a “study it out” and you will “feel” what is right approach?
How do you answer?

Guest1. Did you really plan on endowing women with the priesthood…and allowing them to excercise their priesthood in public. 2. Can you explain the descrepancies between your versions of the first vision?
3. Polygamy. Polyandry. What the hell were you thinking?

Quote:1. Is there a difference between the feeling associated with the Holy Ghost and the Light of Christ?
No.
Quote:2. Why have all “prophet, seers, and revelators” been silent since the death of Joseph Smith? (and I mean the type of revelations that Joseph received: books, revelations to friends, and answers to questions that are received and recorded as revelations )?
The same reason Oliver Cowdery was unable to translate. Joseph had a gift.
Quote:3. Is there a line between those behaviors we can choose to avoid (don’t lie, don’t be envious, avoid pride, be unselfish, sacrifice, kindness) and those, many would argue, we cannot chose to avoid (homosexuality, ADHD, Bi-Polar, depression)?
Yes.
Quote:4. Why don’t we follow King Benjamin’s teachings that church leaders should not be paid for their services as church leaders?
Different circumstances require different practices, so we must adapt. We should not try to recreate ancient practice in today’s society.
Quote:5. Why do Book of Mormon characters often speak about the what the Lord “said” or “spoke” to them and we are left with a “study it out” and you will “feel” what is right approach?
Because we frame our experiences from our point of view. It can be appropriate to have a feeling and say, “God spoke to me”, if that is how you inadequately express in audible language the feelings you have. More important than if it was spoken or felt is the message that was received.
Quote:1 Nephi 19:6
Nevertheless, I do not write anything upon plates save it be that I think it be sacred. And now, if I do err, even did they err of old; not that I would excuse myself because of other men, but because of the weakness which is in me, according to the flesh, I would excuse myself.
They knew they weren’t going to be perfect at it. We need to remember that when studying it.

yes, one is what we call conscience and gently nudges us to do right…. the other testifies, comforts, and warnsQuote:2. Joseph was the main prophet of a dispensation. To me that means he puts the major revelations forward and organizes and those afterward mainly maintain and keep it moving forward.
Quote:3. Is there a line between those behaviors we can choose to avoid (don’t lie, don’t be envious, avoid pride, be unselfish, sacrifice, kindness) and those, many would argue, we cannot chose to avoid (homosexuality, ADHD, Bi-Polar, depression)?
Some things are sin that we bring upon ourself, other are weaknesses that god gave us Ether 12:27
Paul had a thorn in the flesh…. so do we.
Quote:4. Why don’t we follow King Benjamin’s teachings that church leaders should not be paid for their services as church leaders?
I want the 12 and the first presidency focused on the work full-time. While they should not become wealthy through the church, they should be paid. The scriptures also call on God servants to rely on the people at times for sustance.
Also who put food on King Benjamin’s table? roof over his head? clothes on his back? Did he sell barley to support his house payment…. The implication by his words is no-one should get rich nor free load off the church and it’s members
Ex: Joseph Smith certainly was supported by the church and it’s members. Who fed, housed, clothed Peter and the 12 when they were in strange lands preaching? While modest the church must sustain it’s full time servants.
Quote:5. Why do Book of Mormon characters often speak about the what the Lord “said” or “spoke” to them and we are left with a “study it out” and you will “feel” what is right approach?
Does the Lord speaking always have to be face to face. I have had the Lord speak to me multiple times as I have served as Bishop and yet I have never heard his actual voice nor saw his face
How do you answer?

GuestM question as a follow-up to Heber’s surrogate answer for Joseph Smith on the paid ministry… Quote:If the book of Mormon speaks out against priestcraft and a paid ministry, and we have had to relax that requirement in modern times due to changing circumstances, then why is the general membership still left believing that no one, not even the people at the top are paid? When in fact, it appears they are?

GuestQuote:Is there a difference between the feeling associated with the Holy Ghost and the Light of Christ?
Apparently we are all born with the light of Christ, having chosen the appointed plan. Therefore everyone starts out with this, but does not have the Holy Ghost.

Both Brigham Young and Joseph Fielding Smith left quite extensive prophecies.
Quote:those, many would argue, we cannot chose to avoid (homosexuality, ADHD, Bi-Polar, depression)?
I believe the late great Gore Vidal (pbuh) said there was no such thing as homosexuality, there were homosexual acts. I can see where he was coming from. The internal experience is unavoidable, the external experience isn’t.
“ADHD, Bi-Polar, depression”
A great deal of these are caused by bad diet, i.e. processed food, sugary foods, additives etc, lack of exercise etc. I believe the WoW is actually an excellent way to deal with bi-polar disorder, as it flattens out the moods.
ADHD is as much to do with boring teachers as it is to do with the children.
If we dealt with the external, instead of just drugging people, we might actually resolve a lot of mental health issues.

GuestMy list of questions: 1 – Why did you run for the US presidency? Did you think you’d seriously win?
2 – Who did you really want to be your successor? If anyone at all?
3 – What are your thoughts on the contemporary church?
4 – Did you really set up Relief Society as a form of priesthood?
5 – What other scriptures would you have brought us?

Nope. LoC is just a way to explain why there are lots of good people that aren’t LDS and don’t have the gift of the HG. I think the phrase appears once but not as a term identifying a separate entity and I don’t think can be supported by scripture in spite of what Elder Packer believes. IMHO.

Well here is the kicker, depending on the society in the part of the world you grew up in. People “feel”(light of Christ?) differently about certain things that are not taught to be wrong, that would seem abominable to Christ. yet no signs of guilt or really any feelings toward what they have done in the society that did not teach those things as wrong.

Guest1. Did you really at one time believe in buried treasure? 2. So what was the real deal with Fanny Alger?
3. Did you tell Porter Rockwell to shoot governor Boggs?
4. What was your real motivation for destroying the printing press?
5. Did Thomas Marsh really leave the church over milk strippings?
6. Did you ever use hallucinogenics?
Assuming he had to answer truthfully it would be interesting to get the answers.

Don’t know about you, but there certainly is a difference for me.

I understand the “technical” differnce. But in observing and studying different cultures I see no guilt associated with things like stealing, killing, theft, or using others etc where it is not taught it is wrong. Young, teenager or older. If its not taught as wrong in that society no one senses things are out of place or guilty or wrong. In light of that and that many younger ones haven’t had a chance to be “desensitized” to the light yet I do not really understand it then.

For me it’s just the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit or just the Spirit. It’s there working for everyone to a greater or lesser extent. Some feel it or something they interpret as the Spirit and some don’t but, to me, the idea of the gift is just a way of telling baptized and confirmed members that they’re special and set apart. I don’t dispute what someone feels. If that’s the way you feel, then that’s the way it is.

GuestNah, sorry, it’s completely different for me. I’ve always had a conscience (light of Christ) albeit a deficient one. Feeling the Holy Ghost feels very, very different. The feeling in the Temple is different again.
