I’ve mentioned previously that I do regular editing of comments that are difficult to read due to spelling errors, glaring punctuation mistakes, formatting, etc. I never change the meaning in comments when I do this sort of “simple editing”, but I do it whenever the mistakes make it difficult for readers to understand what is being said – or when a comment includes a quote that is not set off as a quote and doing so would make it easier to read.

Forgotten_Charity is a prime example of why I do this, as his comments, I believe, are submitted from a hand-held device and not checked prior to being submitted. Whenever I see a comment from him, I almost automatically hit the “Edit” button without even reading the comment and groan a little at what I’m about to experience. Seriously, there are times when I simply have to make my best guess about what word he meant to type, since what is in the comment makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I am sharing this simply because if my available time is reduced in the near future I might not be able to do as much of this as I have in the past. I don’t care, really, about some of it not getting done, since some of it can be understood without much effort by readers, but I am concerned about Forgotten_Charity’s comments, since I don’t want people to start skipping them just because they can be difficult and frustrating as submitted. If I can’t edit them like I have in the past, will all of you just keep an eye on them and clean up the unintelligible parts whenever it gets really bad?

I can appreciate what you are doing. It’ll be OK if some of that slips through. Maybe some folks will give them a little push back. It might get them to try to write a little better?
