Fair point DBM. I suppose a letter of the law person might indeed say one should tell about the kids or Jew (strict obedience), I wouldn’t. But were I not tell (lie), I wouldn’t be lying for the Lord, I’d be lying for me, my kids, or the Jew although I might see how the Lord could at least forgive (but not condone) for that. I think that’s a bit different than the scenario presented where the church leadership is lying for whatever purpose. I really don’t think any heavenly being appeared to the prophet and said “put up this church website that says it’s OK to have same sex attraction, but don’t worry about it, I’ll send them all to outer darkness anyway.”

I agree as I was just separating the blanket statement from the issue you were addressing.

I guess it’s not always so black and white. It reminds me of a scene in Star Wars Episode 4 where Luke, Ben Kenobi, R2-D2, and C-3PO were stopped on a planet by some Stormtroopers. Ben convinced the Stormtroopers with a Jedi mind trick that C-3PO and R2-D2 weren’t the droids the troops were looking for and the troops let them go on their way. That scene is always amazing. :D

“Lying for the Lord” is a classic Protestant phrase. I heard it for the first time in my life when I was in high school – when an anti-Mormon preacher was caught distributing pamphlets to Seminary students with blatantly incorrect “quotes” from the Book of Mormon and the Joseph Smith translation of the Bible.

The phrase was used by some anti-Mormons in charges against Mormons (interestingly, by not acknowledging its Protestant validations) and later co-opted by some ex-Mormons in charges against the Church. Eventually, a few misguided members also started to quote it as some sort of reasonable thing – but I am not aware of it ever being used by a GA, an apostle or a Church President or over the pulpit in General Conference or in any church manual or handbook.

It’s one of those things that started out in anti-Mormon statements and eventually came to be seen as having a place in the Church by some members. It’s wrong (plain and simple), and I wish it would die the death it deserves to die.
