GuestI’m finally getting around to this. I wanted to give you guys a heads up. I will have to take down the forums at some point when I go through the final upgrading process to the latest version. It’s a pretty significant jump, so I am testing it on the server on a copy of the forums. I want to see what, if anything, explodes on the test copy. I kind of have to work on this here and there as I have time. At some point, I would like to try and go live with the upgrade this weekend.

GuestHowever it turns out, thanks for your efforts. Back in the day I maintained a website for a university as a side project. I know the pains of upgrades breaking things. When it’s not your day job it gets even harder to inflate your enthusiasm levels up to the point of actually taking action. In my case it helped that it was other people making the upgrades, forcing my hand to play Mr. Fixit.
Yeah. Thanks.

Guest-Upgraded phpBB forum software to the latest greatest version 3.2 (from 3.0.12) -I also set the server to use the latest PHP engine 7.0 (7.1 is newer but I am not clear if it is stable)
-I added back the “Activation Justification” extension to the new installation. This modification has been successful for us in evaluating new registrations for years. It asks them to type an explanation of why they are registering.
I noticed some odd error output on the screen when I tested registering a new user, but it did not affect the functions of the process, that I can tell. I will try to track those down later.
I will also post a thread in the GENERAL forum section for user to report bugs. Feel free to post Admin and Mod only issues here in this thread if they need to be kept private.

GuestIf there is an emergency with something broken on the site, you can reach me via Facebook Messenger. I think I am friends on Facebook with most of y’all. If you don’t use FB Messenger, you can also text message me at 240-462-3134 March 11, 2017 at 5:09 am #317748Anonymous
GuestI don’t think the email system (PM notifications, notifications of newly registered accounts, notice of first post approvals, etc.) is working properly. Just a heads up.
Quote:Email error
ยป EMAIL/SMTP
/ucp.php
Ran into problems sending email at Line 1132. Response: 550 Authentication failed
There was an error message that briefly appears while sending PMs, I didn’t do a screenshot before it disappeared but I think it was related to the e-mail notification.
So for the admins/mods: I’m going to try to check the inactive users list every so often to see if there’s anyone that has registered with the site that needs to be activated because traditionally I’ve relied on the e-mail to notify me. [edit] I get a notification when I visit the site so I’m less concerned with someone falling through the cracks.

GuestWhen activating a user account: Quote:[phpBB Debug] PHP Warning: in file [ROOT]/includes/functions_messenger.php on line 1498: stream_socket_enable_crypto(): Peer certificate CN=`*.inmotionhosting.com’ did not match expected CN=`localhost’

GuestWhen I send a PM it gives me what appear to be a bunch of error messages at the top of the screen, although the message goes through just fine. It’s like a bunch of code. March 11, 2017 at 8:25 pm #317743Anonymous
GuestYeah, that’s related to the e-mail problem. The PM goes out but the e-mail notification saying “you have a private message” errors out and you get those messages at the top of the screen (a variant of the error messages quoted above).
Maybe the SMTP settings messed up during the upgrade.

GuestThat same coding language issue is happening to me today when I submit any comment. It looks like an error message, but the comment posts. (Well, it happened on the first two I wrote but not this one.) March 12, 2017 at 9:19 pm #317750Anonymous
GuestNot to beat a dead horse, but I also most times, not every time, get the code error thing but the message posts. I did get a notification of a new member requiring activation on the new notification thing at the top. That’s helpful. I did activate the member but got the error message.

GuestChecking on a few of these things this morning. March 13, 2017 at 3:59 pm #317752Anonymous
GuestSeems that there were changes in how the forum interacts with the email server. I tracked down the issue, made some changes, and don’t see those errors now when sending PM’s or outgoing mail from the forums. I think it was all tied together. Let me know if that didn’t fix what you guys are seeing.

GuestThanks for all your work on this, Brian. You are really going to be blessed in the next life for all your time and sacrifice you give the cause in this life! March 13, 2017 at 6:34 pm #317754Anonymous
GuestIf I work hard enough, I’m hoping to earn an extra planet or two in the Progressive Mormon Celestial Kingdom some day. ๐ No extra wives though, please. One is already too many.

GuestI’m getting e-mail notifications again! I tried PM’ing myself as a test but I don’t think that triggers it. I’ve since adapted my behavior to take shorter, colder showers.
I just got a PM from someone else and got a notification e-mail. It’s nice to be loved… or offensive enough to trigger a PM from someone.
