GuestEver since I saw a particular member of the BYU faculty described as the first female theologian in the church, I’ve wondered about the path to that title in the church, for men and women, but particularly women. I see the series over at fMh: “The Teachings of Chieko Okazaki.” It’ll be interesting to see what the future brings.

GuestInteresting. Reading the comments, they’re not the first but it just happens there are four at once now. I’m not sure what it does for one in the church, either, except my son looked into being a military chaplain which requires a divinity degree (even for Mormons). The army even has a program for potential chaplains who are working the the divinity degree. Anyway, i think it’s great these sisters are doing this. I have long wondered – what’s the qualification to be a religion professor at BYU? I realize many of the teachers of the Book of Mormon and New Testament classes are faculty from other departments who teach one section of the class, but there is an actual department with full time professors of religion. How does one get that job and what qualifies him or her for it?

GuestI absolutely loved my classes at the Harvard Divinity School (cross-registration with the college). I am beyond happy to read about this. August 27, 2015 at 1:01 am #303333Anonymous
GuestIf I understand it correctly, if any of these ladies pursue the chaplain branch they can do things other LDS gals can’t, like perform marriages. Kind of cool. August 27, 2015 at 3:54 am #303332Anonymous

GuestFWIW, LDS Chaplains are poorly regarded in the military. Catholic chaplains are single. They sign up for lots of remote tours. They tend to be on the front lines. They commit their lives to the work. LDS male chaplains have a reputation for looking for the easiest, family friendly assignment possible. Their focus is on their own families. Chaplain becomes just their day job. Even the LDS soldiers I have known pretty much despise LDS chaplains.
Single lady LDS Chaplain could be a better dynamic ..
