GuestThe lesson was D Todd Christopherson’s talk from GC about following our leaders but accepting responsibility for our own actions. We broke into groups to discuss this. Most in my group were more liberal minded and there was one missionary. The missionary brought up an example about an apostle who held a strong opinion about something ( I think it was Joseph f smith) but then when the prophet decided on the matter in a contrary way JFS threw his full support behind it. He was relating this to people who had hesitations about prop 8 but spent time collecting money for it and rallying behind it. He was confident this was how members should behave when we don’t agree with our leaders: full submission. (Side note: it seems a lot of people in my ward had hesitations about prop 8 but spent lots of time gathering money and signatures.) the guy next to me said “I completely disagree with that point of view and have absolutely no problem disagreeing with the church because it’s an imperfect organization run by men. If it was perfect they wouldn’t have to edit general conference talks for print in the ensign.” [emoji1] It wasn’t mean spirited but so unexpectedly honest it made me laugh. Not sure what the missionary thought about it. The good thing is is that the person who said this spends a lot of time planning service projects for our ward so you can’t really accuse him of being apostate.

GuestA few weeks ago in Sunday School the teacher decided to play the audio of a GC talk (I don’t know why he didn’t just go full on with the video, he obviously had the know how and capability) and since I was bored and feared I might dose off I decided to look up the talk on my phone and read along. I was quite surprised at how many words were changed in the text as opposed to the audio. Nothing that changed the meaning of anything, but there was an obvious difference in the two. This could also have been because the speaker did not actually read the prompter and the print version was what he actually wrote but either way there was a difference. That doesn’t mean I’m about to start playing audio and reading along – but I bet we’d find similar things in lots of talks. In all likelihood, that poor missionary in your group probably knows nothing of Elder Poelman – it was before he was born.

GuestWe had the same lesson. The discussion made me think a lot. One truly excellent thing, the teacher read the quote from BY in that talk three times during the class.
Quote:I do not wish any Latter Day Saint in this world, nor in heaven, to be satisfied with anything I do, unless the Spirit of the Lord Jesus Christ,—the spirit of revelation, makes them satisfied. I wish them to know for themselves and understand for themselves.

GuestI shared my experience under the “Good things that happen” thread ( here)
I truly believe more and more people are aware of the things that were well less known even 4-5 years ago.
Nibbler, I like that quote…I’m pretty sure that exact quote was used in our class by a class member. If not that one, one very similar to that.
