I was in Utah county last month and had the absolute weirdest experience. At the time, I wasn’t really sure what was going on. I met one of my former mission companions for lunch. She has been on StayLDS before and is a frequenter of NOM. She was talking to me about second anointings (there is a guy on NOM maybe or somewhere who says he had a second anointing and “tells all”). I was explaining to her the difference between second anointing and second comforter as I understand it and talking to her about Denver Snuffer’s impending disciplinary court. Personally, I think second anointing is bosh, wishful thinking that you can make your calling & election sure, but people still have the ability to sin after, rendering it not binding. Second comforter (actually seeing Jesus) seems more compelling than an ordinance where you are handpicked for nepotistic reasons by cronies. I told her my opinion, and we were chatting about several things in a Brazilian BBQ restaurant over lunch. I said to her we Mormons seem to love creating elite clubs. We started with Mormonism, then added the temple, then that got too big and not exclusive enough so we had to add second anointings.
A guy at the next table over stood to leave. He came over to me and put his hand on my shoulder out of the blue. I was actually really upset about being touched in this familiar way by a stranger. NOBODY touches you in Asia, and I’m not used to it. It was really uncomfortable. He was talking about how long we had been in the restaurant, and I joked that since it was all you can eat, we were just waiting for them to put out the dinner stuff, all the while I was nervously looking down at his hand on my shoulder. He was eight inches from second base! Plus it’s none of his damn business how long we sit in a restaurant. What is he? My dad? The restaurant owner?
Only much later when people online were talking about people in Utah doing this to them did it occur to me that he was feeling my shoulder for garments. I feel violated all over again!
YIKES!! That’s stupid – and I personally have never heard of it or seen it done.
Wow. I have never heard of the touching, we all know people look for signs of garments but feeling is definitely creepy.
This is the second anointings guy, Tom Philips, who took over MormonThink.com. His exchange with Holland is in here. Honestly, I think Holland just totally blew this exchange. We could have done a better job with this guy here because we wouldn’t have been total a**holes to him and might have even addressed his questions. /end rant http://mormonthink.com/tomphillips.htm Did we already talk about this guy? I listened to the podcast interview with Tom Philips, I don’t remember discussing it here. I agree the exchange was unfortunate, I think both sides were disrespectful but you do hope a top leader can step up and deny personal offense. This Tom P guy claims he’s got some big reveal coming up in October that will rock the church to its very foundation. There are ex-Mos saying that’s stupid, out with it already, he’s just getting attention, there’s already plenty to rock the house. Others are big Tom P fans and can’t wait. Anyway, no idea what it is, but given the nature of our site, we should be aware that this is going on. I imagine the NOM folks are discussing it, although I almost never go there. Ear to the ground, I suppose.

He can’t turn you in for talking about something that doesn’t exist and you shouldn’t know about 😈 *wink*I don’t know what the “big reveal” is in Oct either, just heard a bit of rumor about it too. I’m not a fan of big buildups and suspense. Seems like it’s more likely to be a big letdown if he lets the crescendo amplify too long.
He got a raw deal with his disaffection and faith transition process. A classic case study in how NOT to treat people and turn them into enemies of the church.
