Some – not all – of the Q12/First Presidency’s wives end up as de facto female general authorities. Or they could. And in some cases, I think I’d be happy. In others….not so much. But should they?

GuestAnn: That is a really interesting point. A GA’s wife is often better known and may have a higher social presence that a woman called onto one of the general boards.
That is messed up.

GuestI’ve never heard a husband or wife of a GA or General Board Member speak in General Conference – and rarely in any official church setting. Other than Presidents’ wives (and, in some cases, even then), they largely have been invisible, and that is true of both sexes.

GuestI’d love to hear from Elder Renlund’s wife. From what I hear she’s a pretty smart woman. Maybe she can get on the TOFW circuit or something like that. There is precedent for hearing from leaders’ wives in non-GC settings – Marjorie Hinckley was pretty popular back in the day. March 14, 2016 at 4:13 pm #309919Anonymous

I was thinking of Sister Nelson’s talk in January. It wasn’t general conference, but it did get a fair amount of attention and coverage. But that was due partly, I think?, to the fact that she had a career writing and teaching before marrying Elder Nelson. The whole incident made me wonder what her role will be if and when he becomes prophet.
