I don’t know what to think of Elder Perry. I guess I think of him as more of a capable administrator than anything else. He doesn’t strike me as much of a people person …

The most heartfelt thing I’ve heard him say was in a conference a decade or so ago, when he spoke Saturday afternoon just after the financial/statistical reports were presented. Before he commenced his formal remarks, he uttered some praise for the professionals who help handle the finances of the church. I don’t remember exactly when that happened, and I’m sure there’s no record of it anywhere on the internet.

I don’t feel like I really know him, but I loved this video about his time in post-war Nagasaki.

I have been following the conversation here and NOM and man is there a difference. I am glad that we at least try to see the positive when we can. I think for the most part this conference has given us some hope, not just fodder for snarky remarks.

Agreed. I had to stop reading as the negativity was rubbing off. I am grateful this site is one of positive discussion, even when people disagree.

Elder Holland’s last ten minutes could have been written by many of here on stayLDS. He spoke to us. He spoke to me. We need hope and he delivered.

Too bad I walked out when he stood up. I normally hate Elder Holland’s talks, but maybe I should have listened.

He has said some other good stuff in the past, which I think board members have found encouraging and quoted.

I’m steeling myself to watch some GC – if I was to watch five talks which ones should I watch?

I didn’t see any of Saturday Conference. My attention was in and out on Sunday.

Definitely watch Uchtdorf. Holland also had some good things like its OK to believe and not know. Monson’s talk on obedience and the grass fire has to be seen, not just listened to. His facial expressions were good. I don’t remember much else about the talk.

    Elder Holland:

I like the emphasis on how hard it was on the parents who were begging for their child to be healed.

    Quote:

“One way or another, that (being ‘young in faith’) should apply to all of us.”

    Quote:

“Hold the ground you have already won, even if that ground is limited.”

I know those quotes can be interpreted differently, but I really like them as worded.

Desperation is going to come to all of us. (I really like that statement.)

    Quote:

“I am not asking you to pretend to faith you do not have.”

Holy. Crap. I. Didn’t. Expect. This. I really like this talk do far – a lot. There are now too many great quotes to list. They are coming fast and furious.

Seriously, I want to say, “DAMN! This is stunning!” I’m sitting here with tears in my eyes.

I’m closing this comment and just listening.

I read/listen to this talk at least once a week now. It is my bridge while I figure out my faith narrative. Elder Holland captured the depth and gravity of what I feel not infrequently, and helps me to ground myself so that I can move forward. Plus, if/when DH and I talk about my faith narrative in the future, I can say, “Here is a talk I listened to and applied with all my heart to get to where I am. This is something like what it feels like, and what helped me.” A lot harder to condemn me as a sinful heathen if I am following the counsel given by an apostle for people specifically in situations like my current situation. [Not that the anger step should be bypassed if necessary – just would much rather it turn to mourning instead of fighting, yelling, or condemnation.]

The funny thing is, when I talked to my former LDS best friend a week or so ago, she basically said the same thing (start with the principles you have faith in instead of focusing on what you don’t.)

Amy – I like this. I wish we addressed all individual growth the same way. You’ve given me something to think about.
