Ugh, that Anderson talk! Good thing I had to sand the spackling off the holes in the wall (we are getting ready to paint a room. The sanding worked as well as the mute button did for you, mackay11

Thanks everyone for posting what is going on at conference. I have decided this time to read up before I watch and only watch the talks that I think will be helpful to me, and not make me head for the hills. So far, from what I’m reading, it doesn’t sound like the first session is going to be a positive for me. I appreciate the synopses. Thanks. I hope Uchtdorf is a bright spot.

I will miss both (if not all) of the sessions today. When I get a chance, I will read each session for the entire conference and post excerpted summaries of each talk.

    Harmony,

Skip Elders Holland and Andersen. Elder Andersen’s talk was about entrenchment. Elder Hollands talk was about holding the trenches against an assault.

Elder Holland made me feel like I was being yelled at. He must be fun at family reunions. The tension was palpable. I felt that even if I knew that he was a true Apostle of the real Jesus, I don’t think I would want to join Jesus’ Kingdom of Anger.

    Individual perspectives are fascinating.

I have a close friend who is very heterodox and politically liberal. He doesn’t need this site, but he absolutely empathizes with what we do here. He texted me and said he really liked Elder Holland’s talk and that there were “some really good parts of Elder Anderson’s talk”. (He’s learned to look for and focus on the good, so he could have disagreed with much of each one without me knowing about it from a simple text.)

As I said, I will read each talk at some point, so I can contribute personally and not just second-hand.

Yes, quite, and my individual perspective is that I’m done with Elder Holland. I was actually kind of looking forward to GC this time around, but he made me do a 180. I’m going to go to the Priesthood Session tonight, but I won’t be watching anything else, and if JRH speaks tonight I’m going to go wander the halls for a few minutes. Right now, honestly, I feel like his talk… what I’m calling from now on the “Kingdom of Anger Talk”… I feel like his talk could be the beginning of the end for me with the Church. I’ve held pretty steady for a long time, but I feel sick to my stomach right now. Maybe by this time next week, I’ll get over it and carry on, but I’m very frustrated right now.

Ray, you should really watch JRH’s talk. Even so, I know that you will probably like it, because you have a perspective that allows you to do that. No complaints from me. Like it all you want, and I mean that with all sincerity. But OMG, that stern look on his face and that pointing the finger at the camera… too much. I have long lamented the lack of passion in GC talks, but if anger is the type of passion that we are going to get, then I’d rather watch reruns of N Eldon Tanner while I sip warm milk.

One good thing, his talk has freed up my Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. I’ll probably just go into the office and work tomorrow (if you call that ‘free’).

Frankly, I think I will like some of it and not like some of it, based on what I’ve read thus far at multiple sites.

Also, just to point it out, Elder Callister was released as a GA and called into the Sunday School Presidency.

There might be a reason behind that move that most members miss entirely – the extreme backlash against his infamous speech recently.

I believe I understand where you are coming from OON. I don’t plan to watch any of conference. However – I have really liked some of Elder Hollands words in the past.

Just as I am trying to stay in a church that has many things objectionable in it – I also hope to be able to listen to positive things that people/church leaders say even if the other half of what they say might be objectionable. Elder Uchtdorf invited us to “Stay with us a little longer” (paraphrase). That is my goal.

I didn’t see the talk (and from your description I do not plan to), I’m just not ready to give up on Elder Holland quite yet.

Incredible! One of my former missionary companions was just called to the Seventy – I always knew he would be a general authority someday. Very good man.

I didn’t miss it! I think the Sunday School Presidency may be a consolation prize, but I thought the same thing. In fact, I backed it up just to be sure I heard it right that he was released as a GA. I can’t say I’ll miss him.

Likewise, sins in and of themselves do not make us loveless. We all sin, therefore we would all be loveless.

For me Elder Holland can go either way. There were some good things in this talk, but I mostly did not like it and I did not like being pointed at and lectured.

This last talk (Elder Zwick) about ministering grace is fantastic – Uchtdorfian, even. I highly recommend it to everyone.

“It doesn’t matter who is most right” when two people disagree sincerely. What matters is understanding the other person and being gracious in our disagreements.
