I have a general opinion question that is not all that serious, but a curiosity.

I live smack dab in the middle of SLC. I am aware of many different groups here, and there is a VERY big group of “preppers”. (The comment about Julie Rowe in another thread got me thinking about this….). Well, a lot of these people are having dreams and such–and they publish those on various sites. I know of some folks that had rather consistent dreams, yet in some cases, there was clearly no corroborating between them (that I am aware of).

The predicted calamities many dreamers had didn’t happen; September came and went, and many of these folks are perplexed.

What do you all think of this general dream phenomena and the “prepper” movement? (I have no hostility towards them, let that be clear. Just curious….)

    Preppers scare me.

I am in Texas, we don’t have many preppers, but the ones we have are intense.

I think that you can guide your dreams a bit. Go read about lucid dreaming.

I have never put much stock in dreams considering my own dreams. Mine have some pretty weird stuff sometimes. last night I dreamed we had a missionary from Mongolia over for dinner and he would only eat chicken that was freshly killed (he preferred to kill it himself).

As to the prepper movement, I watch the TV show just because I find it amusing to watch people who are a bit wacko (no offense intended). I like that part of what the church said in their blood moon statement – the church has long encouraged people to be prepared for disasters or other life difficulties (although I note nothing has been said in quite some time about it in GC). In that other thread I mentioned how we had discussed these movements in a stake leadership meeting, wondering if it’s something we should be concerned about. We decided not to worry and if directly approached about the stuff we could redirect toward more core gospel principles if we wanted – or just smile and thank them for their concern. We have some food, we used to camp so we have the ability to cook our food, we have a small generator so we can have some power to refrigerate our food for the short term. We do not have a bunker (or plans for one) nor do we have an arsenal.

I have a friend who talks often of a dream she had of packing up a church-owned semi with her year’s supply of food storage. In her dream, she and others who actually had a year’s supply were invited to move to a “safe” land somewhere in the west.

She has seen a large movement of members of the church in moving to the west in real life. I’m in the south and I have also seen many of our members move out that way.

Not sure what to make of that, but it’s interesting nonetheless.

She firmly believes her dream is a revelation.

Whether it is or not, I like to listen to her preparations for “the call.”

    :)

There is a big wait for “the call” that is general among the groups I’m aware of. They really believe it.

I want to be neutral about the issue, but have found concerns when it appears they are receiving revelations that go way beyond personal, share them openly, and then claim the prophet is somehow in favor of the dreams since “the call” will come through him.

Its quite interesting to me as I learn and watch what happens. I have several close friends who really to participate in the movement.

I have had two dreams in my life that felt like they were more. Both changed decisions I was making in my life. Both dreams were very personal and not to be shared.

    Neither one involved prepping.

I do meet the occasional LDS person who feels every little random thought is the holy spirit guiding them.

    Those people scare me.

My son’s mission president was one of those types. It scared me and him both.
