    I better get posting.

I’ve really not been active in posting here on this side as I’m usually on the NOM side of the house. I have people that are very close to me (Hi Honey) that post/lurk here quite often. If she chooses to reveal herself, her choice.

In typical StayLDS terms, I’m the one that left. I was the 1st in my family to walk down the bitter path. It has probably been 10 years ago I was a full, all the way in believer. I have served in every YM’s adult role. I was YMP, EQP, and then asked to teach early morning seminary for a group of very bright kids. This wasn’t your normal seminary class. I had 6 kids who were all motivated, smart, and energetic. I had to be on the top of my game each day. I ate it up, and wanted to do a great job. So… I studied…

Well… You know the rest of the story.

I live in the NW just north of Portland. I try to be active in the MS, NOM, Ex-Mo crowd in the Portland area. I helped organize and spoke on a panel at the Seattle MS Conference a few months ago. I was one of the original crew that started up the Mormon Expression podcast and was on many of the original podcasts. Officially in the church, I’m the ward employment specialist. I’m listed each week in the program under the heading “Ward Leadership” which is pretty funny since I’ve probably been in the building less than 25 times in the past 18 months. I stopped attending at the start of Nov 2012. It was simply to much anymore. It would take the whole week to gear up, and then with a few comments or a “special” talk, I’d be pretty bummed or mad and I would just be a pain. I’m MUCH happier not attending. However, I did tell myself that this break was for 3 months, which is now officially over so I need to either renew my vacation from church schedule, or go try it for a few weeks and see how the Zen in me works out.

Family: My wife attends church most weeks. My eldest daughter has moved back in with us after finishing up a degree at BYU. She is pretty TBM, but last week when the teacher asked how JS translated, she raised her hand and said that JS put a rock into a hat and then put the hat up to his head.

Daughter 2 is in college in the local area and living at home. After 2 years of not attending church, she is re-engaging in order to find a social life. She came to the Book of Mormon Musical with me and can often be heard to say “hasa diga eebowai”

Son 1 is 17 and is in homeschool, internet academy. He was last at church about 2 years ago.

I find myself fairly liberal on social issues, but a bit left of the right when it comes to financial policy. What I’ve come to despise is those who argue the ends of whatever spectrum they happen to be on. Be it religious or political, the extremes are who I tend to distance myself from.

My mantra about most things in life these days is that I reserve the right to change my mind at any time. I’ve been wrong before, and I’m sure to be wrong again.

    Really? You just signed up?

Wow. I just assumed you always were a posting member of staylds? Worlds colliding and all I guess.

Hmmm? What do you know? I’ll be damned.

Always appreciate your perspective when it came to “all things Mormon.”

This reminded me of the July 1993 Ensign article where Elder Nelson quotes David Whitmer saying: “Joseph would put the seer stone into a hat, and put his face in the hat, drawing it closely around his face to exclude the light; and in the darkness the spiritual light would shine. A piece of something resembling parchment would appear, and on that appeared the writing…”

Recently when I went back to read this article I realized that in the beginning he describes the ancient interpreters or urim and thummim that came with the plates as two “stones” set in a silver bow, giving the impression that this is what Joseph had in his hat. I think there is an account of the early process with Martin Harris where Joseph experimented with these interpreters in the hat, but I think the larger size would have made it difficult. William Smith gave the impression that they were too large to be of practical use to anyone.

So anyway, I hope soon we can just talk (in church) about this process the way it really happened — or at least the way the witnesses and the historical record say it happened. I tend to bet that by the time our kids become our age it will be addressed more commonly in Sunday school.

Sorry for the derail, you just sparked the thought.

Any chance you will team up with the old gang (Tom, Glen and Randy) and be a guest on Infants of Thrones?

    I love that podcast.
