It has been a rough six months for me since the last conference. My desire to stay has tanked, by best friend who had been a bishop has dropped out of the church because of the essays, and my connection to the ward is not really there anymore. I am hoping this GC will help but I pretty sure it will only make things worse. I am getting all worked up over it. Plus I went to see Noah tonight with DW and friends and everyone agreed that it was just a Hollywood production but it could have happened just like Nephi and the brother of Jared were able to build ships and all that. I just don’t think any of that happened but when I said that I got the looks “what is wrong with that guy”. Please Lord, throw me a bone here to give me something to hold on to. I hope you do find something like last conference’s talk by Pres. Uchtdorf to cling to. I’m not one of those people who believes that conference has some specific talk for each individual, but there are sometimes talks that really resonate. Frankly, if I was as worked up as you about conference I wouldn’t watch. I know what you mean church0333. I’ve decided to not watch it at all. I’ll wait to watch selected talks afterwards. I don’t think I can put up with 6-8 hours of hoping for a crumb from the table. Conference weekend is my opportunity to take the kids to a different church without missing LDS meetings. Likewise – I do believe that the church is evolving, but waiting for signs of that evolution would be about as much fun as watching paint dry.
I can sympathize with your struggle. I too am taking a break from conference this weekend. I’m in too fragile of a place to deal with hurt or disappointment from our leaders right now. I may read a recommended talk if any hit home with my fellow staylds-ers. I hope you find an opportunity to relax and enjoy some good down time this weekend. I feel your pain. I felt myself longing for the days when I felt special and somehow connected because I was LDS. No more. My wife and family still watch GC (not my son), but whenever I hear anything, my BS-meter goes off and I start countering what I hear. For example, during JR Holland’s talk, he commented about how missionaries and LDS people are special and subject themselves to the persecution that comes from following the savior. However, EVERYONE experiences that, no matter which church they are in to some degree. We get a bit of our special brand of abuse given some of our admittedly strange beliefs, but the “priviledge” of perspecution is common to just about any religion, and just about anyone who does something that isn’t mainstream.
I think you can make any group feel special for what they do — whether in a non-profit, in a particular company, or a religion. I felt a bit disheartened and had to eat a piece of cheese cake to get over it.
Don’t watch. In that kind of mood, all you will hear and remember is the negative – even in a talk that might be 80% positive. The 20% negative will outweigh the 80% positive, and you will remember a negative talk – not the overwhelmingly positive one that actually was delivered. :thumbup: Well so far I have managed to sleep through most of both sessions, and I am taking my slightly red neck son to the monster truck jam tonight. to is going better them I thought. I hope you find a way to cheer up. Went in happy to GC but abit 5-7 minutes into Hollands talk I want from very happy to hurt, depressed sad and full of anxiety. I left and refuse to put up with that kind of attitude and message, my home is a temple and I will not suffer that kind of talk in it. Luckily the second talk was leaps and bonds better and after meditation and the spirit of contention that holland brought into my house Amado brought a warm and loving spirit back in. Anderson was easier to abstain then holland despite the bad message because it lacked the rhetoric and force of contention of holland talk. But ya, I go in with expectation low so I am not disappointed and please toy surprised if anything good does happen in GC, in my life time it’s been a average of 70% contentious and 30% spirit. Noah I actually like, like almost movies based on true stories(not to say that it is literally true) it is always changed just like cool runnings, captan Philips, saving mr banks, etc. all wildly different from the actual event.
But I don’t take everything literally, and as such I look at the bible with as many different perspectives as I can.
Embracing multiple views at once is the best part about such a readers digest ambiguity book as the scriptures.
With that in mind I actually liked The Noah movie for bringing a fresh perspective and bring a environmental message at the same time. Being a good movie isn’t about historical accuracy(if that’s even possible) but about different takes or possible takes on a subject matter that let’s different people identify with different perspectives that leave otherwise leaves those with different personalities and perspectives then the common denominator teaching out to dry on a subject.
The ability to identify with the material from ones own identity and perspective to give meaning to oneself and own identity and culture is very valuable and important.
I don’t think your perspectives are wacky at all, the world needs many perspectives and fresh ones at that if we are going to make it through the ages and challenges we face.

FC, I’m with you. It was very disappointing. As I mentioned in the other thread, I felt physically ill afterwards. Good for you for sticking with it after that. I went to priesthood session last night and enjoyed it. As directly as I can say this, you need to change that for your own emotional health. There have been quite a few really, really good talks thus far, and the Priesthood and Sunday morning sessions were extremely good, overall. Seriously, stunningly perhaps, good. I dare say the balance of conference so far tips
heavilytoward the positive – more so than any other conference in the last few years, probably. If your take away from such an overall good conference is one talk that bothered you greatly outweighing numerous really good talks (and more than one absolutely phenomenal talk) . . . I really think that is something you need to evaluate as objectively as you can and try to change. Don’t let one talk you view as really bad overshadow lots of talks that weren’t bad at all, very good and truly exceptional.

Ray, I appreciate your concern. Yesterday, I thought, for the first time in 15 years, about having my name removed from Church records. It takes a lot to overcome something that visceral. I’m not watching conference today. I can’t take any more of it. I’m glad you are enjoying it.I understand. All I can say is that you heard the worst and missed the best. Please, when you can, check out the notes here and watch or read the best ones. OON, I love and respect you and consider you a friend. I understand how a talk can sometimes leave a bad taste in one’s mouth, and there have been many conferences where I only caught one or two talks because I leave the room and just find something else to do. As I have stated on the forums, I did not like JRH’s talk, either. FWIW, I have in the past considered having my name removed, but not because of one guy giving one talk. I have come to understand there are those like Pres. Uchtdorf who really get it and their talks usually show that, and there are others (I won’t name names) who really don’t get the damage they cause. If only they would all stick to core gospel principles and speak from their hearts with love as I believe Jesus Christ would were he a speaker in GC. Take it slow, don’t dump all at once, and focus on what you do believe. 🙂 Value the opinions of those who care about you here and come back in a couple days and read/watch the talks we thought were good. Like spaghetti, many things are better the next day.
