GuestAaron R wrote a relatively short but moving post on BCC today that I want to share. (“ On Being Surprised by God“) The link is after a couple of my favorite quotes. I recommend reading the post in its entirety and commenting on it here, if you wish. Quote:This surprise is often couched in the realization, to paraphrase JS, that God is more liberal in His views and more boundless in His mercies than we are ready to believe or receive.
Quote:There will be moments when we realize that God must be a “very different individual from what [we] have every reason to believe him to be”. There will be moments when we realize that God likes us as well as loves us.

GuestI really liked this. Somewhere in my journey I realized something similar. But I’ve never seen that quote from JS that I remember.
I really think God must be amused when we assume he will act in a certain way. I like in the comments in that page when they talk about Jonah. I’ve always found it amusing that Jonah was upset when the people repented and weren’t destroyed. We tend to focus on the whale in that story. But that’s missing half the lesson.
When scriptures say we know not the mind of God… They mean it.
I think that’s why the “one true church” idea irks me sometimes. And how we teach we have the true understanding of God’s nature. I think other religions just focus on other facets of him. but we’re all looking at the same thing in the end.
In order for all of us to be made in his image then every single person must reflect some aspect or facet of the creator. I think our paths in life are far more individualized than we tend to believe. I never thought standardized tests came from God anyways.
But who knows. Maybe I’ll be surprised…
I can see God in every religion I’ve studied. I enjoy being surprised when I learn something from an unexpected place.
May we never stop being surprised!

GuestThomas Parkin is one of my favorite commenters at BCC. His comment in the thread includes the following line: Quote:We will laugh to finally know that the mystery is that there is no mystery.
I really love that concept.

GuestI read the piece earlier today and was so uplifted by it. I’ve had some very personal spirit – not spiritual – experiences and I am always astonished by the depth and breadth of their expanse. I imagine that Heavenly Father must be magnificent beyond my understanding and yet not so out of reach. This post captured that.

GuestAnother reply lost by phone! What about the old maxim:
The Lord works in mysterious ways, his wonders to perform.
