It’s relieving because I don’t have to wonder why God loved and cared about her so much more than me and why God would make sure she found the right person while leaving me out in the cold. It’s unsettling because it demonstrates how easy it is for people to mistake their own feelings for revelation from God. It also reiterates for me the reality that there is a good chance that we are all on our own in this life, at least in the sense that no divine being is making sure that the chips fall the right way for people and no special divine safety net exists in this life for the faithful and obedient.
This succinctly states what my major problem is with how I think “God the Father” is represented by members I’ve observed over the years and some talks from the pulpit. The “everything happens for a reason” and “God is directly involved down to the grain-of-sand level with what happens on the earth” just blows my mind and is not the way I see what happens in the world and
whythings do and do not happen in the world. It would make much more sense to me to believe that we are pretty much on our own except for when some huge issue requiring intervention comes along (only several times during the history of the world) and lets us do our own thing without either predestination or full-blown “celestial x-boxing” (as in, celestial beings with game controllers playing the ultimate 1st person shooter games with the world and all that goes with it as the Sim!) of our lives. That would be more along the lines of what I conceive as “free agency.” Thanks for putting into words what I’ve been trying to get to. In regard to Green Apples ex girlfriend’s father who was anti-military and encouraged your ex gf to break up with you: that majorly sucks !!! amazing that you found the very reason why your ex gf broke up with you. not many get to find out the true details of the intermeddling that can go on behind the scenes of breakups that do happen to us with people that we really come to care about. it kind of reminds me of my own situation that brought me to a faith crisis over a decade ago. i felt inspired to pursue a woman in my ward but she was 8.5 years younger. I felt there was so much intermeddling going on that i felt there was very little chance of me even getting an opportunity to date this woman. in spite of it i held on until she married someone else.
Maybe God wanted me to marry her but he knew there would be meddlers involved. in the end she moved away out west and soon after got engaged. in my humble opinion the meddling started from day one. in the end her moving away was a direct result of meddling members who felt she needed a new start away from that ward.
it is history now but that meddling by ward members really sucked. it was what lead to my faith crisis. it is history now but in spite of it i got through it and i am a better person for it. people meddle and unfortunately for some of us who are recipients of that meddling, it can really suck – but it doesn’t just happen at church and as we know it that it can happen anywhere.
I have an elderly patient that clearly remembers standing at the end of sacrament meeting, looking at a man and hearing a voice in her head that she should marry him. They did marry and she said she’d been unhappy since and regrets doing it. You just don’t know and what you think is from God’s mouth to your ear may not be. How you figure out if it’s real or just neurochemicals, I haven’t a clue. Wow, this is one story I’ve never heard. I’ve had “revelations” that turned out to be wrong, but never like this. I’d put the reliability of revelation close to zero in matters of courtship, which is tough because that’s the time that a person would need it the most.
