My 14 year old daughter will be going to a young women’s group & I will be attending a class on the book of Mormon. We were told it is casual and to wear whatever we want & that everyone is friendly. This will be our first time ever in an LDS church. Anything else we should expect or know?

Also thanks to everyone who has been responding to my other posts. I have found it very helpful!

You can wear whatever you want to a meeting like that, but I would go knowing there is a general sense of modesty in dress in the LDS Church that is more conservative than many other places. Jeans, dress slacks, khakis, moderate length skirts or dresses, full shirts of any kind, t-shirts, etc. are fine, as are shorts that go near or over the knee – but you probably won’t see many, if any, tank tops, mid-thigh shorts or skirts, spaghetti straps, etc.

Most members really are friendly and caring, but we have our collective hang-ups when it comes to how we dress – and it’s a near obsession with some people, especially older-generation adults. You need to know that upfront.

There is also some words that are kind of unique to Mormonism, so if some one says something that you don’t understand don’t be afraid to ask.

There are the people Ray describes, and then a lot of people who quietly disagree with the obsessiveness with dress that some of the members have.
