GuestIt’s 33 mins to listen to and about as long to read, but it has so many ideas we could use in discussions, talks, etc. I also recommend reading it as a reminder of Ray’s oft quoted statement of “Getting the Water down to the local people.” This address is a great effort to a more generous look at religions and inter-religious interaction. When you get time read or listen to it. I found lots I want to quote from.

GuestI really liked this devotional, mom3, thanks for posting it. I have enjoyed studying Buddhism, and thought that my light studies of it have helped me bring back to my mormonism some different views, some things I really liked and applied to my mormonism.
I like this quote:
Quote:The great religious leaders of the world such as Mohammed, Confucius, and the Reformers, as well as philosophers including Socrates, Plato, and others, received a portion of God’s light. Moral truths were given to them by God to enlighten whole nations and to bring a higher level of understanding to individuals.”
…
I believe that Buddhism contains spiritual insights that can enlarge and enrich our understanding of God, humanity, and nature. We may have the truth, but we certainly don’t have all truths.
…
Can studying Buddhism make me a better Latter-day Saint? I think so.
So…it is something I think about alot. If we don’t have all truth, and we do recognize others do have truth…then…what is our truth claim?
– More truth than others in total? (I don’t believe so)
– About the same truth, but we have authority to perform ordinances, as the stewards of mankind? (That’s more about authority than truth)
– No different than others…we each just pick our best flavor?
To me…this has been one of (if not THE) biggest sticking point when trying to discuss enlightenment from other religions with TBM members of the church. Most people I talk to give props to others for trying, but seem to feel superior in the LDS church as the “most correct of any” other truth provider. And yet, they typically know very little to nothing about what truth others have.
I love the devotional. I would like to see how it flows to the local levels, but also am trying to figure out really how it would and what that means.
