From the end: “I believe Anne Morrow Lindberg wrote it: The world would be a better place if those who believed would not look at the skeptics as if they were morally inferior; and if the skeptics would not look at the believers as if they were intellectually deficient. In truth, the believer can be a scoundrel and the skeptic can be an ignoramus.”

I contend that we need to believe that our leaders are fallible in order to keep our sanity and integrity. . . . .I have every right and responsibility to accept [a point of view put forward by a prophet] or reject it based on the scientific and spiritual evidence available to me.

Skirting the most difficult issues can be a good strategy to allow more traditional members to consider the core message. When they are offended they give no consideration.

You’re right. It’s a delicate thing, and I’m amazed this talk was given. So that’s all good. These are tiny baby steps, but most people leave the church with big, adult strides. People on the other end of the spectrum give no consideration when the “problem” with polygamy, for instance (I know – big surprise coming from me), is described as, “Joseph’s practice [of it] without full disclosure to Emma.”
