GuestI agree with that Elder Oaks quote on public debate. We all know that the church does not work that way. I appreciate the point that differences need to be worked out privately, that to me says there is room for discussion – just not public discussion that drags along a lot of people who are probably not even interested. I see that as the polite way to go, also the way that conforms to the “club rules.” February 20, 2015 at 5:41 pm #226611Anonymous
GuestSounds like “milk before meat” has become “milk, the other white meat”. I feel like the church is afraid to examine some of the meat because it is not blind faith promoting. It requires that members dig into hard questions and find their own answers. More stuff is available than before now, but it is still never really addressed in a simple honest way.

In fairness, the church has made great efforts in being more open. When I joined the church 30+ years ago we would have never seen anything like the essays. I recognize the essays are limited and still do not come completely clean – but they are way better than what was officially acknowledged before. I do believe these efforts at being more open are reactionary, but I welcome them.
As a side note, and speaking as a participant and not a mod, I think it’s interesting you dug out this old thread to make your point when it was written well before the essays and other current efforts. I might suggest you read through some of our more recent conversations on the topic.

 The essays aren’t perfect. I’d say a few are really inadequate, but everyone talks about baby steps. I think the real telling thing will be how the curriculum is revamped.February 24, 2015 at 8:20 pm #226614Anonymous
