GuestNot a pressing issue at all but I have always heard that the church discourages or is against people wearing masks. I have not been able to find anything in the church handbook and was just wondering how this came about. I have heard this ever since I was a little kid. I personally am not a big fan of masks and don’t let my kids wear them at halloween. Anyone have any insight on this? September 27, 2010 at 5:06 am #235246Anonymous
GuestI’ve never heard anything like this before and I live and have grown up in a predominantly LDS community. My kids and myself have worn masks on Halloween. September 27, 2010 at 9:34 am #235247Anonymous
GuestI too have not heard anything specific from church on this, but I know of several schools that discourage the wearing of masks at their Halloween parties. I don’t know if it’s a safety issue (harder to see when wearing one) or that they want to know who kids are. People who are completely incognito also might be more apt to behave inappropriately at a public event, such as a school party, so maybe that’s part of the reason… I really don’t know. GuestI have a vague memory of some comments like that a church. But mostly, I also hear this from schools as a rule. I think it has to do with safety and potential behavior issues. September 27, 2010 at 10:20 pm #235249Anonymous
GuestAlso, in our society, there is a fear of someone unknown hanging around children at a setting like a Halloween party. September 28, 2010 at 12:55 am #235250Anonymous
GuestThe replies really surprised me. I have heard this ever since I was a kid and almost every church halloween party I have been to this has been mentioned. Must be one of those things that someone started and it just got around. Thanks for the input. September 28, 2010 at 2:30 am #235251Anonymous
Guesttrudge, it has been followed in more wards in which I’ve lived than not for organized church activities around Halloween. I read your post as asking if the Church encourages or discourages wearing masks in general – for example, when kids go trick-or-treating. I’ve never heard anything stated officially with regard to those settings. I should have made that clear.

GuestI must come from the most fundamentalist traditional little corner of the church. Everything anybody ever mentions–every little rule and tradition–always applies to my upbringing. Yup. No masks at church parties and trunk or treats. And yeah, like Ray said, I think it’s a safety issue as well as a general anonymity vs. accountability issue. GuestThey seem to be very much INTO Halloween here. I don’t completely like the festival myself, because of some of its evil overtones. October 2, 2010 at 2:19 pm #235254Anonymous

That’s exactly why I do love it. It’s the only day of the year no one gives me grief for cranking up Death Metal and putting gargoyles, demons, black lights and a fog machine around our front door. Faux evil is way better than the real thing.

GuestI think that does segue into the real thing though unfortunately. I did get myself a pair of vampire teeth though, and wear them sometimes driving the car. It helps sometimes.

We must have grown up in the same ward!
I love Halloween. Period. I love the heathen rituals, the pagan aspect of the whole thing, and even the spiritual symbolism. Halloween really works for me.

GuestThe mask thing is mostly for safety like when going to the store or bank during Halloween. This is however twisted by fundy jack butts as a spiritual issue. That is why my family who adores Halloween will be and does celebrate this awesome holiday outside of church regardless of Sunday. I have a traditon of listening to Coast to Coast Am’s Ghost-to-Ghost and playing games from the Castlevania series while eating copious servings of root beer, coke, and orange floats.
I CAN’T WAIT FOR HALLOWEEN!!!!!

GuestAny and all Hallowe’en events at church I’ve ever been aware of have been accompanied by the obligatory “no masks, please” caveat. Once upon a time, I recall hearing someone give a really scary-sounding explanation which I won’t dignify by repeating here. Aren’t some of you introverts? I’m surprised to see you saying you like it. I usually try to find a good place to hide.
