Ever get a piece of bread when the person breaking bread still had hand cleaner on his hands? Ewww! No. Hehe, and I thought this was going to be a germ-a-phobe thread when I clicked on it. Eewww! Hand sanitizer just became the new rage when I was doing a stint in nursery years ago. I always rolled my eyes and said “great, so now my hands have germs AND chemicals on them. I’m sure that’s real healthy for the kids…” I don’t think so. Of course, my wife and kids say I have no taste buds, so how would I know? 
Not yet, and hopefully not ever. I popped that piece of bread in my mouth, and it was a pretty big piece, and wondered, “What is that taste?” I then figured out it was hand sanitizer. I managed to force it down but it took a bit of effort not to bolt for the door of the chapel, head outside, and spit it out. The only thing that kept me from spitting it out was the somewhat bizarre thought that spitting out the bread would be sacrilegious. I was probably also thinking that the members would be wondering why Brother Thoreau is heading out of the chapel during the sacrament. We must keep up appearance musn’t we? The water wasn’t enough to wash the taste away. It took an hour or more.
I won’t even say what my uncles (now non-members) used to do the sacrament bread. I am so glad that I never had them prepare the sacrament for me…And lets just say hand cleaner would be a huge improvement. My one uncle still brags about how he’d go to the bathroom and not wash his hands on purpose, right before sacrament.
Yes they are bitter regarding the church, and it started when they were teens…they are all almost 70 now.
That last story is a great (horrible) example of what happens when people let bitterness canker their souls. I don’t know the background details, so I don’t know the root cause of the bitterness (and they probably aren’t appropriate here), but that’s a sad, sad commentary on wasted energy and the effects of not letting go. Thoreau, I would mention it to the Bishop or someone in the YM Presidency. Obviously, I would do so calmly and quietly, but I still would mention it. It probably wasn’t just the piece you took that was affected, it probably was accidental, and it might happen again if nobody mentions it.
I’m sure it was just an accident and I did mention it to the YM president. He was very apologetic. We have/had both hand sanitizer and alcohol wipes at the sacrament table. I was just lucky enough to get a piece a bread that someone in a hurry had broken after using the sanitizer. Another crazy thing that passed through my mind was that I was taking the sacrament “unworthily” and that was why it tasted tainted. I think taking the sacrament has been discussed on another thread. The things that go through your head after over 30 years of indoctrination.
I’ve never had this happen. I don’t know which worries me more; that I will one day taste that, or that they don’t clean their hands in the first place.. Sounds like you not only received purity to your soul, but a bit of purity to your mouth, throat, stomach! Lucky you!
I wouldn’t be surprised if people started suggesting the Priests use those little plastic gloves like they have in the sandwich shops.
:think: Sometimes I’m glad I’ll never have to worry about being a bishop to have to deal with such things in the church.Can’t they wash their hands with water, I hate those slimy cleaners!
