Just want to wish all the mothers here and everywhere else a Happy Mother’s Day.

In many ways, I had an ideallic childhood – and I could not have asked for a more loving mother. However, that is not the case for everyone.

The best definition of honoring father and mother I ever heard was to live your life in such a way that those who don’t know your parents will bless them for bringing you into this world – even if, for various reasons, you find it hard actually to love them.

May we honor our mothers this day by being the best “us” we can be, even if that is not the “us” they envisioned when they bore us. May we love them for giving us life, even if we struggle to love them for anything else. May we forgive them their weaknesses, even as we wish to be forgiven for ours. May our hearts be turned to them this day – and bonded in a very special way.

Finally, if we were fortunate enough to have had mothers whom it is easy to love and honor, may we look for ways to be surrogate parents to those less fortunate than we.
