Guest“Mormons join Hawaii’s gay-marriage fight, but with a new approach” http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/56890226-78/church-hawaii-lds-legislation.html.csp I LOVE the fact that this letter accepts that members in good standing might prayerfully consider this vote and still be in favour.
Quote:Members are encouraged to study this legislation prayerfully and then as private citizens contact your elected representatives in the Hawaii Legislature to express your views about the legislation… Whether or not you favor the proposed change, we hope that you will urge your elected representatives to include in any such legislation a strong exemption for people and organizations of faith.
While the tone of this letter puts the church clearly in favour of it not being passed, it respects the memberships ability to reach their own conclusions and makes no condemnation of one perspective or the other.
It also seeks for religious freedom for the church… rather than the church being able to limit the freedom of other people (which was the approach Prop 8 took).
This letter did not come from head office. It was a stake leaders’ letter. A spokeswoman expressed support for it, but it’s not ‘from the top.’

GuestI really like this letter. This is SO much better than the CA Prop 8 approach, and it reflects the principle of teaching people correct principles (in this case, nothing more than civic involvement through personal study and prayer) and allowing them to govern themselves. I think this is a huge improvement, and I am very happy to see it.

GuestI really think marriage has to be properly defined. The straight marriage advocates ignore factors like the numerous cohabiting male-female couples. Also I think governments themselves have helped undermine marriage.
