I am Rick, 5 years convert to the church.

I grew up in a Southern Baptist household. I remember intense passionate services, we went twice on Sundays, I don’t remember going to mid week. I went to vacation bible school. In high school I got away from the church culture for several decades.

Around 2009 I had a surgery wih a long recovery time and I felt a calling to find a church. I literally went to a different church every Sunday for a while. That was a total blast. One day I was in our public library and walked by the religion section and ended up checking out Mormon for dummies and Mormon,Inc. Both intrigued to the point where I went on line and requested a missionary visit. Missionaries called the next day.

I am such a square peg, 50,never married, only child, 1 living parent, very small extended family that is not close.I have been listening to Mormon Stories for a year maybe. I have an interest in LGBT issues when I will talk about in proper threads and maybe others things as well. This looks like a great place to be right now.

Last in terms of an introduction, I live in Fred Phelps and the WBC hometown.

Welcome, interesting introduction. Why did you leave the Southern Baptist church? What attracted you to the LDS church?

I’m always curious why people leave one church & why they join another. Join in. We would like to hear more from you.

Why did I leave Southern Baptist ? It was the 80s,I was in high school. It was becoming too political and that was a time when a lot of kids stopgoing to church.

What appealed to me about LDS ? I liked what I saw as the ward acting as a community. I know some argue against the social nature of the church. I think it is at its best when we move a stranger into the ward. The whole concept of Home Teaching, when it is done is wonderful. It just seemed right at the time.

Hello, from one square peg to another.

I’m also a convert, but closer to 25 years. I’m also an only child and come from a small family by most standards (which is an incredibly small family by Mormon standards).

I bet the missionaries geeked out over “finding” you. In my case I saw the missionaries riding their bikes on the side of the road and I pulled over to talk to them. Missionaries spend so much time looking for people to teach that it must come across as a modern miracle when someone seeks them out.

    Welcome to StayLDS.

Hi, Rickinks – I’m glad you’re here  and look forward to hearing more. I agree that home and visiting teaching have potential to be real forces for good.

    Welcome Rick,

We Mormons can be great as a group to become a community or church family. We can also be insular and clannish. Two sides of the same coin, I suppose.

I look forward to hearing more from you!
