    F4h1,

You sound like the kind of mormon I would like to be. I envision myself going to church each week. I effortlessly ignore any of the drivel that comes over the pulpit, and actively appreciate and ponder the insightful talks. I skip meetings if I don’t like them, but I stay close so that I can know about those in need. I often approach the EQ president and HP group leader and ask them about who has a need in the ward and how I can help.

Finally the daydream ends and I go back to being the same barely active mormon that I now.

There are real opportunities for good in the LDS church, but I struggle to filter out the bad stuff.

Welcome…I say stick around for the kids. I have a testimony still, but the boredom gets me REALLY badly. I can barely stand it. But I see the fruits in my kids. I wouldn’t confuse them by being absent or overtly uncommitted.

    But that’s just me.

I guess you have to ask yourself if you leave where will you go. Because it is all I have ever known the church still feels a need in my life even though I believe it is mostly man made.

Welcome to the site. I think the others have given you some pretty good advice and I don’t have a lot to add really. Hopefully this site can help you work out some of the frustrations and questions about why we decide to stay.

I do need to remind myself that this isn’t an “all-or-nothing” kind of situation. This is a hard mind-set to get away from though, because I’ve been hearing it most my life in church. Someone asked me recently if I was LDS. The answer wasn’t just a reflex. I thought a brief moment, and said yes. I didn’t say it because I still hold membership, but because being a mormon is a part of who I am, and always will be whether I’m a member on the books or not. I’m not embarrassed by being a mormon. I just not enamored with it either.

What a great post! Maybe the following comparison doesn’t fit exactly, but your response made me think of how I consider myself a conservative republican. That doesn’t mean I agree with everything Sean Hannity says, I have my own opinions about some things and some things I just don’t care to have strong opinions about…and that’s just me. But in general, I consider myself more republican than democrat.

I think it is the same with being mormon…it may be time to break out of the mold and decide for yourself what connections with God you have and what things are important for you and your eternal progression, whether others agree with you or not. It may be safer to stay clearly in line with everything you are told to do…but there is growth in really challenging your beliefs and making them more deep and personal and honest within yourself.

…And nobody can tell you to stop calling yourself mormon, if that is who you think you are. Thanks for posting…I really like your thoughts.
