I’ve been asked to give a sacrament talk on Family History. I don’t want this to be a how to kind of talk.
I believe that it should compliment the mission & spirit of Jesus Christ.
I’m wondering what an investigator or visitor from another faith would think.
Any suggestions? I need all the help I can get.

Lots of tough talk assignments showing up here of late… Maybe talk about how Jesus’ family history is included in the Bible, why that was important, and the importance of doing our family history (the real kind, like actually getting to know something about our ancestors rather than leaving it at when they were born and where and whether or not their temple work has been done).
You could give an effective and interesting talk about family history and leave all the mechanics of “how” out of it as well as temple work if you want. Really the only part of family history that interests me is finding out about ancestors, how they lived, what they experienced, and that they were people. People who loved, hated, had difficult lives and faced circumstances we can’t imagine. They weren’t abstract DNA donors, they were my father and mother but generations removed. I just don’t get excited about submitting names to the temple, but I find family stories fascinating. Perhaps you can find an interesting family stories that others can relate to and explain that family history is getting to know your ancestors as if they were really family members.
I also like the idea of Jesus’ family was recorded in the bible. Why is that?
Because it can be important to know where we came from. It can be inspiring to feel pride in knowing the sacrifices made by your ancestors.
Let people figure out how to get on computers and submit names, that’s the boring details. The vision of WHY we do family history is good.
So many stories in the Book of Mormon about lineage, and the OT too. Many have pioneer stories to learn from.
Knowing who we are helps us know what we can become.
Maybe you can work Star Wars into it somehow and get the attention of some youth.

You could talk about the research that shows children do better in all aspects of life when they know stories about their ancestors. It gives them a sense of being part of something bigger than themselves. Talk about how such knowledge can be applied to our spiritual and temporal lives. I might talk about how getting to know one’s ancestors can help that person get to know themself better – which can lead to self-acceptance and a better understanding of why they struggle with certain things. I also would teach about the 2nd Article of Faith, which I believe says we won’t be punished or held accountable for the things we inherit from our ancestors, since they are things we didn’t choose consciously. That understanding can have a powerful impact on how we view the Atonement and grace.
