GuestI’m not sure I like the angle of fishing for someone to be a character in a novel. I am not inclined to approve this one, but maybe someone could PM him. June 9, 2015 at 4:57 pm #300656Anonymous
GuestI am glad that he is upfront about his intentions. I wish that he might tell us more about himself in his “intro.” I will send him a PM and see if I can answer his questions.

:I would love to see a beautifully drawn character with complex faith, but I don’t know if that’s what he’s really wanting or able to do.

GuestI read his intro first and then came here with the same concerns Hawkgrrrl has. I believe the mission of the site is to help people who want to StayLDS stay. I’m not so sure that what Hoju wants fits the mission. While I do think there probably are some people here who fit the description of the character he wants to build, I honestly don’t think there are many here who don’t believe all or most of it and he might find better fits over at NOM. On the other hand, I do sometimes find it helpful to think about and talk about what I do believe and this could provide some people that vehicle – but I’m still not inclined to approve. GuestIt also feels like we’re some sort of zoo or something. Also, what is he really creating in this character? A complete hypocrite? Someone who is an MP, but secretly doesn’t believe. That’s the stuff of novels. I just don’t like seeing people turned into caricatures so some novelist can make a buck. June 9, 2015 at 6:41 pm #300660Anonymous
GuestSorry I am late to this party – My two cents – he can do character research without being a member of the group. We are open to public viewing. He can search BCC, RationalFaiths, Wheat&Tares for inspiration.
I vote no. We are a sight for healing and help.

GuestAre we saying he can’t join, or he can’t post that first request? Or both? We’d need to be clear about it. I agree that NOM is the best place for his request. More thoughts dribbling in…. In the wake of the cwald situation, we should probably be pretty diplomatic in how we refuse. And probably not, like mom3 says, suggest only NOM, but NOM among several other sites.
And thank him for being honest.
See why people in my house feel slightly micro-managed at times?

GuestGood point, Ann. I don’t think I’m opposed to him joining (he has already been approved) but I think his posts need to contribute to the mission. I’m only opposed to approving this post. June 9, 2015 at 9:44 pm #300663Anonymous
GuestHe just sent me an email, to my personal account, explaining what he wants and assuming I am someone who doesn’t believe but participates. He is using our email database to approach people individually. I don’t like that – not at all. We aren’t a marketing resource, especially for that sort of thing.

GuestI have responded to him in PM. He appears to not have known how the PM functions so I cave him my email as well. I will feel him out further to see who he is and what he wants.

GuestI told him to email me back when he registered. Sorry. I didn’t know. I thought it just dropped and he lost interest. He sent an email to the admin address a week or so ago asking if he could get in touch with people who attend LDS church but do not believe. This was supposed to be research for a novel he was writing. I told him he could perhaps ask on the forums.
If you guys think it is too strange, that’s fine. No skin off my nose either way. I figure he could post his contact info and leave it at that to see if anyone was interested. Obviously NO self promotion or advertising of his book.

GuestI have no problem right now, since he isn’t actively pushing anything. I didn’t like getting an email to my personal address, and I will be upset if I get another one, but I’m cool with where we are right now.

GuestAs a follow-up, I did converse with Hoju and answered his questions. We had a long phone conversation and then some follow up emails to answer specific questions about missionary life.
Haven’t heard from him in a few weeks so I think he may have gotten what he needed.
