When I was younger and fitter, I considered joining the military… after all they train you up for work.

My politics stopped me. I knew I could go into wars I disagreed with.

I’ve always thought it interesting that when a large animal gets severely injured, the “humane” thing to do is to just put them out of their misery (i.e. Kill them). But when a person is in for a lifetime of suffering, there is no “humane” treatment, only “let God decide”. Just ironic that humans don’t get humane treatment.

I had a friend who watched his Dad slowly die of cancer and he said that if he thought he could have got away with it, he would have killed him out of mercy. For some people, death is the only comfort possible. At the other end of the life spectrum, is it better to end a fetus early, or let the child live and be born into a life of pain and suffering? Would you rather desperate teenagers leave a newborn in a trash can to die or just get an abortion?

As for military killings, Sometimes you have to kill a lot of people to save even more people. It’s a drag, yes, but it only takes a few really bad guys to cause a lot of suffering of innocent people.

And I would kill a person attempting to do serious harm to my family without hesitation. To me, my family’s life is more important than anyone else’s and if forced to make a choice, I will make it.

Nobody “supports” killing, but it is naive to think it is black and white.

    Thank you for your comments.

It is encouraging to see respect and honor for life – including life of those brothers and sisters who are somehow different from us.

Everyone, I skimmed the post and missed some of it. Since we have gone the rounds in the past about a couple of things that I didn’t realize were in the post, I am exercising my admin right to edit the original post to remove references to specific sexual activities and other references that don’t fit the mission of this site – and part of that is to edit the subsequent comments to be in line with the editing of the post.

Particularly, this post will not be another homosexuality discussion. It will be focused solely on the issue of killing and why people see it differently – and how to deal with those differing views within the LDS church.

I hope everyone understands, since I still believe the issue of death and killing and how we view them differently can be a good discussion.

    Ray,

I do not appreciate you putting words as if I wrote them, when I did not.

[I didn’t do that. Every comment of mine was bracketed to be crystal clear that they were mine. It was obvious to everyone that they were my words and not yours.]

YOU wrote (under my avatar)…”[Charge that everyone who disagrees with author are suffering illusions and denying axiomatic truth deleted. That exact charge has been argued in another post, the same one referenced above that was deleted.]”

[Repetition of things already deleted were deleted again. Also, my description of what Featherina said is accurate. She said those who don’t agree with her on specific issues are denying “axiomatic truth” and supporting “illusions”. Those were her exact words.]

Hoping you will at least leave this post untouched [Sorry, I already explained why I did what I did the first time, and repeating what has been deleted once won’t make it stay this time.], I will not state much more about this, because as I mentioned, I do not want this thread to be about that, but I also don’t want it to be ignored, because such ignorance is the cause of much suffering.

“I do not know a worse degree of slavery than to be afraid to think for yourself and speak what you believe.” -Elder George Teasdale, LDS Apostle

[That quote, used in this context, is a perfect example of why some of the deletions were made in the OP. There is nothing wrong with the quote, but there are rules of etiquette in a forum like this that dictate compassion and not making sweeping charges about everyone who disagrees with you.]

Although I think the church leadership could do much more, I am glad that they support the protection of life in the womb.

This, among other reasons are part of why I “stay lds.”

[You are correct, they do – but they also allow for abortions in some situations and, ultimately, they leave the decision up to the parent(s). They also explicitly take NO political position on abortion – and that is incredibly significant.]

Are those the only 2 options? Of course not!!

How about supporting only media that encourages sexual responsibility?

How about teaching teenagers the potential consequences of sex – pregnancy, STDs, etc.??

How about adoption for the many couples on waiting lists to adopt babies?

[What was deleted once has been deleted again.]

Featherina, do you not understand how offensive your “homosexual comments” are to homosexuals?

This last post is a good example. It is offensive.

Believe whatever you want and discuss whatever you want, but maybe not here…this is a support forum. There are homosexuals who participate. They don’t need this discussion.

[Charge that everyone who disagrees with author are suffering illusions and denying axiomatic truth deleted. That exact charge has been argued in another post, the same one referenced above that was deleted.]”

I disagree with your stance on homosexuality and on abortion…and I think your last post pretty well proves Ray was right to insert this into your OP.

    Cwald,

Tell, me exactly what I wrote that isn’t true.

If truth hurts, so be it. It’s better than living a lie, only to suffer even more for it.

[This comment leaped WAY over the line. I am editing the comments and will close the thread when that is complete.]

    No.

You know your posts are designed to provoke. Have a good day.

I didn’t think you could tell me.

[cwald didn’t say he couldn’t answer; he said he wouldn’t answer. There is a HUGE difference between those two responses, and It’s an important one. Not answering was the right thing to do in this case.]

Maybe my posts do provoke – to truer thoughts, so that more will act based on truth, instead of lies.

[Again, a great example of the charge that everyone who disagrees is denying axiomatic truth and embracing illusion. Charges like that are not in line with our mission and are the primary reason this thread is being locked.]

I hope for the best for everyone. As a mother, I care for others – everyone because I realize they could have been my child.

As a mother, sometimes I tell my children things they don’t want to hear, but what they need to hear – all because I love them & want the best for them.

[We are not children, and we don’t need to hear what you have said that has been deleted. This comment also is highly offensive and in opposition to the mission and spirit of this site.]

I hope you have a good day, too.

A lot of military operations are switch and bait. The public gets told one thing, and in actual fact there is another reason behind it.

Do we really assume that the West’s continuous interest in Libya, Iran and Iraq since at least the 1970s is really to do with freedom and democracy? Or is it to do with the fact that they all have massive oil fields?

I can think of numerous dictatorships, some with horrific human rights records, that the west ignores.

And why Afghanistan? I quoted the Sherlock Holmes’ story about Watson serving there… why the long term interest? Is it because we want to make them better people, or is it because it has always been a strategic place in Central Asia (especially for the Russians, and to a lesser extent the Chinese)?

The idea that we invade somewhere for the benefit of the occupied is as old as Rome itself. Usually there’s another motif. People don’t like being invaded or occupied or colonized. So they fight back. We label this “Islamism”, or attribute it to shadowy organizations such as Al Qaeda (the real life Smersh? Or Specter?)

We’re being sold a pup on Mali right now. We keep on being told it’s all Islamic etc etc… it’s actually to do with the Touregs of the north, who live in a region called Azawad, and want their independence. It’s not as if Mali is some great democracy anyway.

I’m going to go with cwald on this. @Featherina Your posts are out of line. You can state your opinion without being graphic. You can say you oppose abortion because you value the sanctity of life and believe it is murder without going into graphic detail about how it is done. It reminds me of those who stand on the side of busy roads with graphic pictures of babies, thinking they are doing good by “helping” others see what they might not. What they (And you) don’t understand is it can be very sensitive for people who may have had similar things happen to a child of theirs through no choice of their own. Your words bring back painful memories to me of losing my child to a birth defect. Out of respect to others (and myself) I’d ask you to be more sensitive to others and less graphic.

I tried. Thanks, everyone, for your input regarding the title question.
