Sorry Cwald, I didn’t realize they were related.

To me, there’s a world of difference (in emotional terms anyway) between stealing a mint from someone, and stealing their car, or between letting out a cuss word and beating someone to a pulp.

Absolutely —- that is why I cannot answer SD’s/OP’s question fairly.

I signed up for NetFlix recently and found some older TV shows are available to stream to my TV. Now, I’m hooked on Friday Night Lights Season 1.

In one episode, the cheerleader who had sex and was being treated like the Scarlet Letter by school kids, was told by a caring adult…

    Quote:

Did you ever consider God created sin so that we might know His mercy?

I immediately rejected that…because I don’t think God creates sin. But the more I think of it…if I changed the word “create” to “allow” …I actually think that is pretty profound.

In that light…when I sin (go against the the things I’ve been taught are laws of God…see cwald’s other thread for definitions), I usually beat myself up pretty good, and often feel more confused in my life. Then I feel more hope because I feel I can be forgiven, and then I feel thankful for Mercy. Then I seem to see things more clearly, which is what I describe as “seeing the Light”.

I preach that general idea regularly in my talks – that we live individual lives, and “God” interacts with us individually.

I’m starting to realize this — the feeling in my chest, and tingling in the roof of my mouth is unique to me, based on the responses from this group.

However, have you ever experienced the “burning in the breast” described in the D&C? (I think it’s D&C 9)? Or is this something only a few people experience? The heaviness I feel in my chest gets replaced with that burning, tingling feeling after a sufficient period of repentence. Perhaps JS was describing his own personal way of experiencing God’s influence, and not something that is generally felt by the population at large?

I’m amazed no one picked up on my original point. It depends what the sin is. Do people really have a uniform feeling about every single sin?

Sorry SamBee, I have limited RAM, I desparatly need an upgrade

I feel increaslingly guilty depending on my personal belief(what I was taught at church, semiary, on my mission, FHE, GC etc.) of how serious the sin is.

I relate D&C 9 with revelation more than with repentance or feelings when one sins. Of course, they are related, but D&C 9 was Joseph trying to describe to Oliver how revelation comes to him, which I think is one way many people can experience it, but not universal. Trying to describe revelation is like trying to describe salt, right? Its an individual experience, as is the experience of sin.

I agree with that. I think it definitely depends on the severity of the sin.

Some sins are debatable, as Cwald says, some sins are bad but easily undone, and some sins are barely forgivable. Definite spectrum here, and I think most of us probably have a spectrum of feeling around them.
