Great post, Roy. Thank you for sharing.

I was just reading this morning from Eckhart Tolle, and was impressed by his words that “Peace” and “Happiness” are not the same things.

Happiness will come and go, and it has a polar opposite of sadness. We cannot avoid sometimes losing happiness in our lives, it is part of the mortal experience, and requires that sadness also be a part of the experience. When my father died, I could not feel happiness he was gone. However, peace can be found internally, despite the weather outside.

I think gratitude is a part of finding that inner peace. I think prayer is important to be calm and reflect on what we are grateful for, and allow things to be as they are, whether that is happy or sad, not try to control the elements and eliminate sadness.

I may be sad my father has passed away, but I can still be at peace, being grateful he is in a better place, without pain and suffering in this life. I am grateful I knew such a great man, and that he could teach me while he was here. I am grateful I have a son of my own, that I can try to emulate the example my father left me.

As I find more peace in my life, I find my prayers are more about what I’m grateful for, and less about what I need to ask the Lord to give me.
