I just listened to “A Thoughtful Faith”. They interviewed Bruce’s nephew, James. It was a fascination interview and I learned some interesting tidbits: (1) McConkie’s are democrats. (2) McConkies are all lawyers. (3) James said he disagreed with Bruce on the status of blacks pre-1978. James said he worked in Senator Gunn McKay’s office and Gunn was for civil rights. James had some really progressive things to say. I highly recommend the interview. (Perhaps I may transcribe it this summer when I have more time–it was that good.)

A few months ago my wife said “Hey, there’s some stuff in that book that just isn’t right. Should we get rid of it?” I said, “Sure” and tossed Mormon Doctrine in the trash. Solved.

So here’s the question… how can someone we consider to be an inspired leader of the church get so much, so badly wrong. I’ve been pausing to question what confidence, if any, I can place in the church leaders. It makes me more interested in being selective about what I accept and believe as a way of making mormonism work for me.

When a list is compiled, I think it can make something look worse than it is. I would say over 95% of what Brother McConkie said is awesome.
