Are you as hard on others, that may report to you, as you seem on yourself?
Not any more. I used to be very judgmental prior to receiving that same kind of demanding treatment from my local priesthood leaders about four or five years ago.
I have since learned to lower my expectations — of both leaders and the volunteers I have had the opportunity to lead. And I’ve learned to read people’s strengths and passions, and to uncover them. I don’t ask people to do things when my judgment tells me it’s not their strength, their passion, or something they are intrinsically motivated to do — unless it’s a short-term commitment. That has increased the success rate dramatically.
At the same time, with people who have commitment, and passion, and strengths in the area we need strength, I’m a proponent of challenging goals. Those people, most of the time, step up.
