GuestInteresting. Along those lines, with my changed reference points of the Church and the Gospel – I have come up with what I think is an interesting question. If I am asked if the church is true, I could ask the person if they feel their elder’s quorum is “true”. It is an organizational body. I don’t feel that in and of itself does not mean that God can be directing (some of) it. I would then follow up that with, “I do believe the Gospel to be true and the Gospel was true even before the church was organized.” Just a random thought and probably one that is old to many here. GuestHmmm… is the Elders’ Quorum true? Not sure about that one. For me, when people say “the church is true” they are saying they believe in its origins and truth claims. That JS did restore the gospel, that we are the “only true church on the face of the earth” etcetera, The Elders’ quorum is simply an appendage of the church, and so in saying “is EQ quorum true”, you are again, asking if the origins of the church are true, etecetera.
Now, if you asked “Is EQ the place I where my time and talents can best serve humanity?” Then that could lead to some very interesting, and potentially life changing answers for people.

Brilliant!! I think that helps people think about what it means to say “the church is true”, about what they are really claiming. I like that.November 23, 2014 at 10:22 pm #288158Anonymous

SD – I do get what you are saying and I know that is what people are usually MEANING when they say it, but I want them to think about how they may not be 100% the same. When I bear my testimony I always talk about how the GOSPEL is true. One of my latest favorite lines (it may have been from this web site) is, “the gospel was true even before the church was restored.” In my testimony I will say that the church makes us better people and I fully believe that and have seen it to be the case.November 23, 2014 at 11:19 pm #288159Anonymous
GuestIf we can say the elders quorum is an appendage to the church (and I think we can from one point of view), then can’t we also say the church is an appendage of the gospel? Is not the purpose of the church to help us learn and live the gospel? November 24, 2014 at 2:12 am #288160Anonymous

The phrase “I know the Church is true” doesn’t make a lot of sense — and you are highlighting that in you question. Now I get it..
