Anyone getting leery of that post? (http://forum.staylds.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1009) The story is changing every time humanist comments, and it’s getting more and more bizarre.

The guy she is describing is 20, has a great career but is living with his parents, is being threatened with his parents’ divorce over him serving a mission or going to BYU, gets ambushed at a luncheon with others in his career field, has parents who would be lost without his computer expertise, lives in an expensive suburb (implying at least moderately rich parents) but is worried because he can’t afford school and rent (even though he is making good money in his career), etc.? Each element is plausible (to a degree) in isolation, but all of them together – rolled out one-by-one as the previous comment is addressed?

Also, humanist keeps asking questions as if she has no idea about the inner workings of the Church [e.g., “How does it work if you refuse to meet with the Bishop or SP for years (but he keeps attending church, taking the sacrament and paying tithing?”)], but then turns around and makes it obvious that she knows a lot about the inner workings of the Church. [introduction says she is a 7th generation member, RM, married in the temple – and, btw, 7th generation is about as far back as it is possible to go]

I sense a spiraling conspiracy tale that will get even more and more bizarre and start including all kinds of issues and allegations. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m getting uneasy about whether it’s true – or a cover for a troll. The questions and presentation (especially the almost scripted unraveling of disturbing details – including a sympathetic grandfather immediately following george’s comment) just don’t seem to jive properly for someone who is supposed to be what she says she is.

I remember thinking the 7th generation comment was odd too, but didn’t really focus on that at the time. I’m just so used to people claiming to be 6th generation Mormons … or whatever.

Your observations are valid Ray. Since they haven’t said anything out of bounds yet, I say let them continue. It’s good to keep an eye on potential problem people and alert the whole crew of us when anyone sees something brewing. That way we are all watching and can take care of things quickly when online.

P.S. I posted a gentle challenge to the details in that thread.

I suspect that Humanist might be the “friend” they keep asking questions about.

Yeah, I wondered about that, valoel – especially since it’s now branched into a discussions of Asperger’s and missions.

Yeah, I know. That sounds odd. I figured people our age make claims to being 6th generation Mormons. So their children would be the 7th gen right? Seems unlikely still, but I suppose possible depending on how rapidly the “generations” in someone’s family matured and reproduced. That’s the first time i’ve ever seen someone say they were 7th gen (hehe, I feel like I am talking about product prototypes).

Very unlikely if they are the 40-something year old adult they claim to be. It might be possible if they are indeed the 20 year old young man struggling to decide to go on a mission suffering from mild Asperger Syndrome, and a manifestation of that is they can’t talk about their deeply personal problem in the first person. That might also answer why they are not socially aware of all the nuances of Church function, not having the life experience of really witnessing all these things in action.
