Another unusual way of looking at traditional scripture.

I am not so sure that reading the scriptures isn’t a form of fortune telling in the sense that you “fill in the blanks” and tailor it to your life based on your experiences and some general outlines. As others have pointed out, you can find meanings within the scriptures to support most life choices.

I cautiously assign “scripture” as “truths (usually written) that were meaningful to someone at some point and have been relayed to me in some fashion”. I try to be respectful and listen intently – hoping to the find something useful for me in the dialog or my thoughts. It helps to view all “scripture” as coming from meaningful and benevolent grandparent – useful and meaningful in some applications, but generally taken with a grain of salt (or more depending on the how pertinent what is being said is to me).

One of my greatest sources of comfort and discomfort is that I can pull meaning from meaningful experiences with the scriptures/general conference talks. For example, while listening to President Nelson’s talk in this past session of conference (I think it was the Sunday afternoon session), I got the impression to focus on receiving personal revelation – including defining my personal questions and devising a means to go about resolving them. When I re-read the talk now, I see the statements regarding revelation – but I also see how the traditional formulas are re-stated (not necessarily a bad thing) and I derive so much less from it.
