GuestQuote:May I ask everyone a question? Why do many Americans support a president who has been proven to have lied all the time, who only cares for his wealthy friends, and has not kept many of his campaign promises?
The wall with Mexico should pay Mexico, now the American taxpayer pays for it. Steelworks are still closed or short-time working, and more than two thousand people have died because of Corona. And, for me, the worst: he defends racists and does not respect RBG’s wishes.
So why do so many Americans support despite everything Donald “I grab every pussy” Trump?

GuestThanks DJ. Good call. Given the upcoming election, the climate of divisiveness, and the temptation, we might want to consider locking the thread.

GuestI did consider locking that thread. I likely will. I did get the following PM from Gerlinde in response to the warning: Quote:DarkJedi, I don’t run “politics” here, but only represent my opinion and my questions, because I’m very concerned about some things. In my view, Trump is the worst president the US has ever had, and churches are doing too little to combat child sexual abuse.
If you think I can’t say such things here, it would be better if you delete my account, because I’ll always say what I think. That is why I have often had stress in my home ward with the bishop.
Sincerely yours,
Gerlinde
I responded that this is simply not the place for discussions like that and repeated there are plenty of places to do so and reiterated that this is not necessarily a place where one is free to discuss whatever they want but we do have a mission.

GuestThanks for fielding that. I might agree with a political thought or two but I don’t think this is the place. The rules and policies post could maybe use some sprucing up to reflect this, maybe not. Here’s the part I think is relevant:
Quote:We actively moderate the content at StayLDS so that information and dialogue stays focused on the mission objectives of the community. Please refer to the information published in the “Rules and Policies” forum section, especially the “Rules of Etiquette” for StayLDS and the “Mission Statement” of the forums.
Politics doesn’t appear in the etiquette post, so I think it’s an unwritten rule. The moderated post also had the grab ’em quote which also skirts the rules of etiquette.
It’s tough because I think most wards lean a particular direction politically and it can be hard being the odd person out politically and when political views become enmeshed with the “gospel.” How do you get support when you’re in that situation?
But going back to the post, it’s similar to the other posts. Why do people do abc? Why do people do 123? Why do people do re mi?
Dunno, but they do.

GuestI also looked for where the political discussion ban was but found nothing explicit – but I know that’s been the general rule here (apparently unwritten). But it does fall under the mission of the forum guidelines and the one part was definitely not of the PG variety. His PM response of “This is my opinion and I’m free to express it” (paraphrased) is also typical of those who want to stir the pot so to speak. You do indeed have your freedom of speech – but not necessarily in a private place. In my response I did encourage him to direct his posts to how we can help him or how he can help others. I really think he’s mostly here to bash the church and stir the pot – he has yet to ask for any help or offer any help. And just one more thing about the politics – he lives in Germany and is even less directly affected by Trump politics than we are. And, Mormons did not put him in office – many of them may have voted for him (I know many who did not) but Mormons are not enough and Utah was not the place the election was won. Those that put him in office are going to vote for him again, I think fewer Mormons will vote for him than last time.

GuestPlease see the thread moved to the parking lot. He also once again going on about censorship. I am inclined to grant his request and delete the account. I did explain to him the permanency of that action and how it’s not censorship because we’re not the government but it is our ball, our rules. September 26, 2020 at 11:07 pm #340262Anonymous
GuestI’m not sure what to think. Anger is a part of the healing process but from the threads I found (added here for everyone’s benefit)
He’s been stuck in that phase and the same talking points for several years. He may not be interested in moving on from the anger stage.
I see another post in women and the priesthood thread that came after the challenge to delete the account. He definitely seems to have a bone to pick and may be looking to force our hand.

GuestI’m not sure what to think either. Certainly beating a dead horse. All of the incidents in his post seem to have taken place in the 1980s and the article quoted is from 1996. I’m aware of incidents that happened then too. I’m also aware of incidents that happened outside the church then, including public schools. Are “the church” or “the school” to blame? Not in my opinion, the perpetrators of both the incident and the cover up/ lack of action are to blame and to some extent general culture is to blame. While I believe there are more current incidents, I am personally unaware of any and I believe they are fewer and farther between and that is at in part due to church action and policy since then (as well as cultural changes). All of that said, other than this beating of the dead horse of church sins of the past, the defiant “I’m going to say what I want to say regardless of your rules” attitude and general lack of positive contribution to the forum are my real concerns. He has asked for and offered no help, but has continued to degrade the church while trying to hide behind the guise of it being under the same umbrella as other churches (pricipally Catholicism which he also appears to dislike). Of course I am also privy to the pm’s he has sent me, which are much more clearly defiant.

GuestI received the following message from Gerlinde (at the end of a message ranting against censorship): Quote:If I have not violated the netiquette, there is no reason to delete a thread or post. For this reason, I do not want to wait for your decision, but i would ask that my account be deleted immediately.
For me, freedom of speech is a great legal asset, and I experience enough censorship in the Church. I don’t have to have it here. Please write to me by e-mail that my account has been deleted or suspended. You have my e-mail address from the registration.
He is aware the post was not actually deleted but hidden and could be unhidden.
Per his request I will delete the account.

GuestThank you for handling this DJ. I agree 100% with your attempt at moderation and now with deleting the account. September 28, 2020 at 5:04 am #340266Anonymous
GuestGood call, all around. September 28, 2020 at 4:41 pm #340267Anonymous
GuestI did have a little bit more time to research our friend, and it appears he has been banned from several church related forums including Mormon Dialogue for similar behavior, sometimes posing as a sibling or friend. -
