Leaders are in a difficult position, I imagine they don’t want to make changes that will upset the more orthodox members but they also recognize the need for change to retain rising generations. It’s a balance.

I also think they have a cautionary tale in the RLDS or Community of Christ. The RLDS church had an identity crisis and a schism between the hardliners and the more progressive members. I think it is fair to say that the progressives won, but at what cost. The RLDS church is struggling for members and in money (recently selling off historical properties and artifacts to the LDS church).

I sometimes say that the LDS church adopts changes 30 to 50 years behind the rest of the world. That might not be by accident. By that point, the main body of the church have already grown up in a world where the proposed changes are common place and the majority of those that grew up in a time when those changes were foreign and representative of corrupting the purity of the doctrine have passed on.

The concept of an “Overton Window” also helps to explain this phenomenon nicely. The church seeks to be on the bottom or conservative side of the Overton Window. In this way the church can “hold their ground” against the changing ways of the world and decry how these changes represent the world going to hell in a handbasket. Much later the church will eventually adopt these same changes themselves when society moves forward and the old conservative viewpoint falls out of the Overton Window to now be viewed by society as unacceptable, radical, and extremist (racist, sexist, homophobic, etc.).

Then when the church finally gets around to changing, it’s revelation:

    Quote:

Nelson taught that these “adjustments in temple procedures, and others that will follow, are continuing evidence that the Lord is actively directing His Church.”

I must ask the question again. If I’m out of line, tell me & I’ll go aways.

What is the future of StayLDS.com?

Is there any way to generate more interest on this site?

Or, will someone shut the door & turn out the lights?

I would really hate to see this site go away because of lack of interest.

It is what it will be.

We never have “advertised” in any way, and we won’t. If people need us and find us while we still have active admins, this site will continue; if not, the archived posts and conversations will remain available. Our legacy will live on.

    I have peace with that.

I hope it never goes away. I still have questions now and then as I change and evolve. It helps to know there are people here to interact with. I’d feel so lonely without it…

I agree with SD. Personally, I would definitely dislike the silence.

For some of us, this is the only place we can ask the tough questions & get answers without experiencing judgement in return.

I think that StayLDS is in the wrap up phase. We have been fortunate to have a sponsor to keep the lights on. There are now many other places where people can go to meet the types of needs that we address here. I love all the participants here and many that have not participated in a long time. Every time that an old chapter ends and a new one begins, there is a sadness and a grieving, but holding onto the old chapter can sometimes be holding us back.

Last one to leave, please turn off the lights.

I’ll always be grateful for this site. It helped me a great deal during some tough times when I felt pretty alone and had no clue there were and are so many people with the same misgivings and concerns as I had.

I’ve sought solace here less as my faith transition matured into non belief in the church and my activity dwindled. I have attended 4 times this year. Special events like Easter, mother’s day and a missionary homecoming.

I’ve found less interest in church related news.

Still.. I’m here now. It seems I still need the therapy on occasion.

I will always be grateful to you all. Thanks.

I, for one, hope StayLDS doesn’t ever go away. I am a very infrequent poster, but I do occasionally stop by and lurk. This is a great forum for people like me to find that we’re not alone, and that’s important.

I totally get what you’re saying. I’ve been part of some online communities where the activity dips over time, but the ones that stick around usually have a core group that keeps things going. It’s great that StayLDS has been so helpful for you in reconnecting with the church—it’s always nice to have a space to discuss things that feel more personal. Hopefully, people will continue to find it, even if the traffic slows down. Communities like this can have lasting value even if they’re not buzzing 24/7.
