Wellppp – I ran into “The New Name” last night. It’s a mouthful. And a page full. A lot of full.

We have two fantastic LDS – Mormon -Church of… Stakes that serve at a shelter I am a site coordinator for. Love the people. Love the work.

Last night was our seasonal training meeting. Two women were half an hour late (it was a typo problem). I knew from their dresses who they were. No worries. I see them signing in. Grabbing their stuff. Sitting down.

Because they were late, a leader from another church, kindly tutored them on what they missed. I was way-laid by others talking to me. When I reached them, the leader friend, asked “Which church are you with?” Simultaneously the long snake of a name came rolling out. “Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.” Problem is, because it’s a long name and was being done in stereo, no one could understand them. Looks of puzzlement crossed a few faces. I jumped in and said, “Mormon.” It was just easier. The two nice skirt sisters nodded their heads, giggled a bit, then returned to conversation.

Later in the evening, I picked up the sign up sheet. Sure as shooting, they did their dang best to cram the entire phrase into the small line reserved for “church”.

It isn’t these ladies faults. They are doing their best. I am not trying to beat a horse dead. But this change is going to be a humdinger. It doesn’t roll off the tongue. We still aren’t even clear beyond the “Mormon” part what short cut to take.

In my role, I am the social media support for the shelter. Today I was asked to write a post about a Stake that served over the weekend. I truncated it to Church of Jesus Christ. I was hyperventilating the whole time trying to sum up the church. This is my people. I know their hearts. I also know how the rest of religions work. It’s a “by their fruits” deal. Not a name deal.

This whole “Riding Side Saddle with John Wayne – Rough Shod President Throw Out An Idea Thing” is going to test my soul in a million ways. Not to mention all the non-members who really don’t get what all the excitement is about.

Saw this article on Deseret News on the hurricane clean-up.

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/leaders-and-ministry/2018-10-21/a-florida-sabbath-day-defined-by-ministering-via-chainsaws-and-yellow-t-shirts-48277

They make a clear effort to avoid the word “Mormon”. They referenced Yellow T-Shirts, Yellow clad, and “Helping Hands” numerous times but even though the word “Mormon” was prominently displayed on each shirt and vest. It was never mentioned. This is a distinct contrast to the Deseret News coverage just last month of similar hurricane recovery efforts where Mormon was featured prominently.

For the short term at least it appears that we are tying ourselves up in knots. I have heard that after President Benson gave his speech “beware of pride” that some LDS families stripped the word “pride” from their vocabularies. They refused to say that they were proud of their kids – choosing instead to say somethin to the effect that they were pleased with their kids’ choices. They felt that refusing to say the word “pride” made them less prideful. This kinda feels like that. “A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet.”

My SP, who claims to have gotten this on very good authority, says the Mormon Newsroom is going to remain the Mormon Newsroom for the foreseeable future. Its name change is not imminent.

I noticed in conference, President Nelson shortened it to “Latter-Day Saints”. I’ve also seen “Latter-Day Saints” used much more prevelantly than the full name, or “Mormon”, on official LDS sites and publications. It still removes “Christ” from the name, and it sounds concieted, BUT it’s still much better than using the full name of the Church, in my opinion.

Two steps forward, two steps back. Dosie doe, and to the left.

I’ve been using LDS for the past couple of years, when I write a blog or Facebook post.

Today I feared I would get trampled if I didn’t get the best version out. That’s half the stupid on this.

    Not to mention;

As a culture we get weird. We doubt our doubts totally out of context. And have no problem playing “Wack-a-Mole” for a word.

But remember – “Don’t be offended for the word”?

Just to be clear, “Latter-day Saint(s)” is a ‘proper’ term for a person, equivalent to “Member(s) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” or “Saint(s)”, any of which would be preferred (in RMN’s view) to “Mormon(s)”. RMN used the term several times in GC, as you pointed out, but this was only in reference to people. In his Sunday Morning address, he used both “Latter-day Saints” and “member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” to refer to the people. When referring to the name of the Church, he only used the long name.

When I was a Spanish-speaking missionary, I would sometimes just say “The Church of Jesus Christ”.

The full name is REALLY a mouthful in Spanish:

“The Church of Jesus Christ” – 6 syllables.

“La Iglesia de Jesucristo” – 9 syllables.

    “of Latter-day Saints” – 5 syllables.

“de los Santos de los Ultimos Dias” – 11 syllables.

The full name in English is 11 syllables, in Spanish 20.

Timing myself at a normal cadence, I came up with the following times to say the name of the Church:

The Mormon Church – 1.0-1.1 seconds

La Iglesia Mormona – 1.4-1.5 seconds

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – 2.4-2.5 seconds

La Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Ultimos Dias – 3.5-3.6 seconds

    Saluton!

The Book of Mormon is available in Esperanto (unofficially) and there is an online LDS Esperanto community.

We need a revelation with a short name of the church with Christ in it, and a name for the adherents due to changes in technology in our modern day. Let’s get with it and stop trying to make a name that is too long, and conceived in the 18th century, fit. It’s a square peg in a round hole. Nelson is open minded, if anyone can create a new revelation for inclusion in the D&C it’s him…

At one point, I would’ve said this was heresy! Only God dictates revelation, on his timetable, and his ways aren’t ours.

Now… this is how revelation works. :P
