A social media fast is a GOOD THING but not when regimented.

And that’s a good point, Sam. When the AA came and trained our stake on ministering one of his main points for us was don’t programize it. Likewise, Elder Cook gave a very similar warning when talking about the two hour block. (“We trust you to counsel together and to seek revelation for implementing these adjustments—while not looking beyond the mark or trying to regiment individuals or families.”) Because the church is so used to everything being programmed, it’s easy for us to want to continue to do that – but much of the time the opposite is what’s actually needed. It’s when we’re doing things because we want to do them that we get the most benefit.

I have a huge problem with a social media fast requested exclusively of women.

Thing is, he could have chosen to make it an adult request, but he didn’t. The excuse that the men didn’t get it because there was no Priesthood meeting is bunk. He spoke at every session. The request should have been made to all adults during one of those. Not a singled out situation.

I agree we need balance and moderation. I will plan my own, when I feel the need for it.

The request didn’t have to be made at all. Just throwing that out there as a viable option. ;)

For the record I don’t think it should have been women only.

But breaks from social media are a good thing. Facebook is full of passive-aggression and oneupmanship.

To me, this is just further evidence of the infantile way these men see women. Do some women behave like children? Yes. So do some men. Do all women need to take a fast from social media to reduce negative feelings? Maybe. I regulate how I use social media all the time. It’s called being a grown up.

A lot of people (non-gender specific!) don’t and social media can become antisocial for various reasons. As a lady who is, over 21 years old (sorry!), I can guess you remember a life without social media. As do I. Unfortunately, I do believe social media twists one’s perception particularly if you are in the 12-20 bracket – it’s having serious psychological effects on them and also making them unable to debate or accept those with differing opinions.

I don’t get the point of the social media fast.

It is essentially to “get our priorities straight” (my words). if we’re not spending so much time on social media, we could spend it on doing other things like reading the BoM. And that brings me to a related point. Today was F&TM in our ward and there were several about doing as Pres. Nelson “inviting” (apparently read commanded by some people) members to read the BoM before the end of the year. After the first couple I was thinking to myself “I don’t remember him saying that.” I was texting during the meeting (as I often am) and texted that out to the guy I was texting with (who was in the same room). His reply was “That’s because he said in women’s session.” So what is it with hounding the women? Social media fast? Read the BoM before the end of the year? Why’s he picking on the women? (I do know he “invited” the youth to do the same thing earlier, and since he has only invited youth – which I am not – and women, I believe I am still exempt.)

Because it is a genuine problem in our society. We don’t look up from our phones often enough, and it is no substitute for real social interaction. It’s also destroying our attention spans.

Where I disagree is with the fact that it has been ordered and women only.

I know from personal experience that this is actually a good thing to do, and not just from a religious POV.

I wonder if he’ll hound the men in six months. It’s possible President Nelson is an equal-opportunity hounder who happens to be constrained by an alternating schedule.

Why didn’t he just do it in one of the general sessions?

I’d hedge my bets he was just writing his talk for the Women’s session, the idea popped into his head, thought it’d be helpful, considered it revelation, and included it in his talk. I don’t think he had anything but the best of intentions, and seriously doubt he was being deliberately sexist. I don’t agree with him on many things, but he has a good heart.

The biggest difference between the men and women’s sessions, in my opinion, is that women are told how wonderful they are and men are told they are not good enough. Maybe most women need to have their confidence strengthened; and wouldn’t a social media fast help? Maybe most men need to step up their game. Maybe folks like us on StayLDS can no longer have our needs fully met by prophetic counsel (no matter what it might be), and so it’s easier for us to see its limitations.

Here were my ruminations on the social media fast, which incidentally I only found out about via Twitter, so take that for what it’s worth! https://wheatandtares.org/2018/10/09/ruminations-on-a-10-day-social-media-fast-for-women-girls/

Good read! I’m going to save your blog, it’s impressive!

My suggestion is that when these women reappear on social media, read their posts for a day without commenting and the next day post, “Sorry gals, I’m just getting back now, because my fast went up to 11.”
