GuestWell, it wasn’t really a day, it was only SM, but I did survive and actually did pretty well. I had asked my family to sit in the back and I had asked a friend to text me when the bishop stood up to start the meeting so I could just come in and sit on the back row. I have always preferred the back bench but my family doesn’t usually sit there. Turns out as I was walking from the parking lot I ran into another friend who was apparently doing the same thing I was in attempting to come in right as the meeting started (he wears a colored shirt and no tie) and while I did get the text appropriately we did enter just as the bishop was welcoming people to the meeting. It was, of course, fast and testimony meeting, which were once my favorites but are not now. They chose one of my favorite hymns for the sacrament hymn (I Stand All Amazed), but I was a bit concerned when the bishop (who was conducting) really hit some of my hot button issues with all the things he “knows.” Other than lots of other people who “know” prayers are answered and that the church is true, I was able to contain myself. There were a couple good ones, actually. The lady with the foreign accent who goes up every fast Sunday and bears long testimonies that I mostly can’t understand said in the clearest English I have ever heard her speak that the most important thing is that we love each other and do good for each other. And there was the guy who recently had open heart surgery who simply said our church was the truest – leaving room for others to have truth and leaving room for more truth for us.
I was able to leave pretty quickly after SM without running into many “imperial entanglements” and not having to give my excuses. The bishop and I had come up with “This is all I feel comfortable with right now” but I also had the excuse of being out to the very early hours of the morning helping to clean up after last night’s prom (since my younger son was on the clean up crew, I might as well help as opposed to just watching) and then picking up my older son from the after prom party.
Next week is Mother’s Day, so that shouldn’t be too bad – although they are still having the linger longer. I won’t be lingering longer for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that our missionary son will be Skyping that day.

GuestThis was your first SM in what, a decade or more? Congratulations. It sounds like you had a good experience.
