GuestI share that concern, Martha. I have no problem conceptually with wanting to make sure new converts, especially, know who the top leaders are, but hanging a picture of the FP in meetinghouses and homes just doesn’t work for me. We have a picture of Jesus displayed prominently in our home, but we don’t have any pictures of church leaders there. May 14, 2013 at 7:26 pm #269035Anonymous

As a kid I visited a member’s house on Halloween. I thought it was cool that they had this really big dracula painting over their piano in the entry way. After a few minutes I realised that this was actually a painting of JS. Because of the context of halloween, the dim and colored lighting, and JS’s puffy shirt – I could have sworn that it was Dracula. This experience has stuck with me as a reminder of how weird it must be for non-members to see pictures of church leaders (especially in old timey clothing) on member’s walls.
I also have a funny story about my MIL. She was mortified that we had a Christmas ornament in the shape of a cross on our X-mas tree. She explained that the cross was a symbol of Jesus’ death and glorifying in the instrument of his torture. A few weeks later she sent out an X-mas themed FHE for all the grown adult “kids” to teach the grandkids. The craft/object lesson was these nails that we were to turn into X-mas ornaments. The nails represent (you guessed it) the nails used to affix Jesus to the cross and are meant to be a reminder of His atonement. Oh, the irony!!!!

GuestIf someone wants to use an object to make them feel comforted, I say go for it. However, I do find pictures of Jesus in LDS homes and Church’s puzzling. In the pictures, Jesus looks very European and almost Scandinavian. I just find that a little odd. -
