For the record, Christ did refer to a woman as a “dog” for belonging to a different race (Mark 7:27-28). So that is always a possibility.
I do think it is very easy to mold our views of Christ to fit our definition of “good” rather than shaping our definition of good to align with Christ. I remember on my mission seeing a man holding a sign outside of a church which read “The Lord Jesus said, ‘don’t smoke’.” Really, when it comes to getting to know Christ, I have little faith that mankind knows what “Jesus Would Do”. We can trust someone who claims to speak with Christ, but as a whole they don’t seem very reliable. We can trust in the “Spirit”, which seems to tell different people different things (not all of which are true). Or we can try to make our own best guesses, and maintain the hubris that somehow we are wiser than 99% of those around us.
Personally, I really appreciate this quote from the Kalama Sutta, given by Buddha:
“Don’t blindly believe what I say. Don’t believe me because others convince you of my words. Don’t believe anything you see, read, or hear from others, whether of authority, religious teachers or texts. Don’t rely on logic alone, nor speculation. Don’t infer or be deceived by appearances. Find out for yourself what is true and virtuous.”
What I believe matters most is the lesson, rather than the teacher.
