    Friends,

Those of you included in this email have expressed interest in teaming together to form an initiative to help LDS folks in intellectual, emotional or spiritual crisis find a way to stay in the LDS Church if it is their desire to do so.

(If you do not desire to be a part of this, please let me know now and I’ll take you off my email list)

My initial thoughts are as follows (just to kick off the discussion):

    Core Service:

    * Support for those in “the struggle” to remain LDS. This support could come in a number of ways:

    — “Whitepapers” or essays we write together on “how to stay”

    — Ultimately I’d like to see these essays compiled into a book

    — Short multimedia presentations we produce for Youtube on “how to stay”

    — Interviews we conduct and release via podcast on “how to stay” (folks who have struggled, and found happiness in staying)

    — Eventual blog on “how to stay” (if we have enough interest/traction)

    — Direct outreach w/ folks in crisis either via: Phone, Email, Face to Face, This Forum

    Let me know….

    * Your thoughts/reactions

    * Who else we should involve in this

I know that our time individually is quite limited, but I think that together, via coordination and planning, we could do great things together through small acts.

Based on my experiences the past 4 years, I think that we could help thousands w/ an effort like this. Let me know if ya’ll are interested.

Will those you call “newbies” be thrown into the mix with everybody else? Should we classify people?

Those people providing service and mentoring will need a back channel to communicate (one that people seeking the help shouldn’t have to deal with).

What Brain said. It doesn’t have to be an invisible back channel, but it should be at least a separate section within the overall site.

    John,

Forgive me for potentially being stupid, but how does this forum fit into your larger vision? Is this forum open to anyone? Do we need to worry about confidentiality issues? Is this forum public?

This forum is private, and only my friends and folks I trust get in.

The forum can be whatever we want it to be, but I imagine that we’ll use it to do behind the scenes work, and to discuss/collaborate.

The blog and podcast will be the public-facing part.

Make more sense? How does that sound?

How will the people who need help make themselves known? How will they ask questions and get direct help? A blog is directed and scripted from the top down. So are essays. The good part with that is the control over content and discussion. It’s more focused and controlled than an open forum.

Will there be a forum for the people who need help?

I get 1 to 3 emails a week. We can help them via the forum if we wanna, or via the blog.

Or one on one (calls, etc.).

Or if we do a good job w/ the documents and podcasts and stuff, we can just point stuff there and put it all on auto-pilot. That is my personal dream. :)

    John,

I think my blogging time will be curtailed significantly in the very near future. I still plan on blogging in the evening and at night, but much of my daytime availability will be disappearing soon. However, I would LOVE to be involved with one-on-one, personal discussions and mentoring. As an educator at heart, that would be a dream come true.
