I don’t remember hearing any of the following ideas emphasized very strongly in Conference (if at all):
1 Corinthians 13:1-4 wrote:Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal…And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing…And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
Matthew 15:8-11 wrote:This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me…But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men…And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:…Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.
Ephesians 2:8-9 wrote:For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:…Not of works, lest any man should boast.
2 Corinthians 9:7 wrote:Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
Sure they vaguely mention charity once in a while but how many active members are ever going to take away the idea that this was supposed to be more important than all this other stuff we typically hear about repeatedly? Not very many in my opinion; it is basically treated as an afterthought and what really matters the most if you listen to them is a few points like obedience to prophets and externally visible “works” like tithing, the WoW, full-time missions, and temple marriage.

GuestInteresting. I’ve heard those messages, and more lately than in previous years. I don’t mean that in any way other than to say that it really is interesting what individuals remember differently than others.

Well said! For me, first of all they need to teach repentance in its true sense. The way it is taught now, it seems to be something that you can do every time you make a little mistake. So it’s like, whoops, yelled at the kids today, I’d better repent. And tomorrow, whoops, yelled at the kids again today, I’d better repent. That’s not real repentance. Real repentance is a permanent change that the Lord makes in you through His atonement. It’s not something that you do everyday over every little mistake but something that takes a long time to accomplish as you seek to come unto Christ.
After repentance is the reception of the second comforter, which I can’t think of ever being taught of in general conference. We must come unto Christ personally. Oh, yes, they say that, but they don’t mean it. What it means is that we must seek our own personal meeting with Christ. They say, come unto Christ, but they don’t actually expect you to try and see Christ yourself. Those who try to obtain their own personal meeting with Christ are often considered a little loony or maybe even dangerous.
There are similar things that are missing from our general conferences, though these two seem the most important to me. They seem awfully busy trying to tell everyone what a good job the church is doing and convince us all that we are well loved in the world that they miss the true elements of the gospel. As a church, we are NOT doing well. And we really ought to be told that more often so people will lift their heads from their pillows and WAKE UP!

GuestAgain, fwiw, those messages are being delivered more the last few years than in the decade or so prior to this. I agree that I would like to hear more of them, and I agree totally about the too narrow definition of repentance (a soapbox of mine), but there has been an upsurge in the type of messages lately that you guys are describing.

I too have heard an abundance of the Doctrine of Christ preached and way more so in recent conferences. Listen to Elder Holland – Grace and Elder / Bednar – Holy Ghost – it permeates their talks
