Not sure if this is significant or not, but he said “The Father has not changed his mind about how his plan should operate.” Optimistic view could interpret this as a hedge for possible future change?

Good heavens. I get what he’s trying to say, but he failed miserably at it. I liked the part in the feminist Mormon housewives blog where it was compared to blindness. Since he sees it as a disability, he could also have said, there aren’t any blind members of the church because that doesn’t define you. Your ability to see isn’t important, what’s important is that you’re a child of God.

Definitely didn’t make the point he was trying to.

He is the most old-school conservative apostle alive today.

He is totally wrong about this one.

I hope this link to the YouTube video works:

“Preguntas y respuestas con Elder Bednar”

There are other disturbing quotes from this meeting going around on Facebook, but I don’t feel like quoting them. People always talk about, “Oh, everyone was so worried about Ezra Taft Benson becoming prophet, and then….” Sad to feel so disconnected and disinterested. I’m not optimistic, but understand that things could change.

Indeed Benson was not as politically active as president as some feared, but he is the least favorite of my lifetime – politics or not he had lots of baggage in my view. That’s what’s so scary about Bednar – he has a high chance of ascending and of a long tenure.

Bednar’s baggage will include the excoriating publicity he’s getting right now. I’m angry today, have to admit. So I guess I’m not as detached as I say I am.

It’s Bednar. Not much else to say.

Go easy on him, he had to deal with the struggles of being too attractive. :problem:

    🙄

I admit that I make no attempts to hear him speak beyond conference. I wonder if he would talk this way to a North American audience. The cumbersomeness of translating might make his words come off even worse. Like when he compares shaking his hand and looking (or not looking) into his eyes to Judgment Day.

    Shaking my head.

What I got out of the video was, there are not labels in the church.

Yet we (the Church) use labels all the time to describe members (& others) all the time.

    For example:

    Active

    Inactive

    Apostate

    Temple worthy

I have not watched the video MM, and may not for a few days (it’s long). But that message by itself is great and it’s true – we as a people are very guilty of it.

I think a good leader is bold enough to make a clear statement on issues so you know where leadership stands, so that it makes it easier to follow.

Bednar is bold enough to avoid wishy-washy comments.

The problem is if he is wrong, his credibility will take shots. But…good leaders can also overcome mistakes by making more memorable and timing successes to overshadow mistakes of the past.

In one way, it is good to know where Bednar stands. I know I disagree with his comments on this topic.

Just to summarize. Elder Bednar seems to be saying that SSA is not a central characteristic of a person’s identity. That is fine as far as it goes but it does not seem to be applied to heterosexuals. Being a man or being a woman (including the part about being attracted to the opposite gender) is something that is taught to have existed in the pre-mortal realm and will continue in the eternities.

Being gay cannot be an essential characteristic because God’s plan only works for heterosexuals. God would not create children and then forever exclude them from his plan. Homosexuality then becomes a difficulty of the mortal probation only that can be endured and outlasted.

Just as has been said that “We are spiritual beings, having an earthly experience” – Gay people can be thought of as “Spiritually straight beings, having an earthly gay experience.”

Does that correctly describe what Elder Bednar seems to be saying?
