Today one of my ward members shared that he’d been asked to participate in a church “focus group.” He participated last week. The discussion was on how to teach church history to youth. The church is researching the ideas of active and faithhful members on this.

Clearly the church is aware of how finding out unknown history later can be hard on a testimony. It sounds like they are thinking hard about how to safely “inoculate” the youth.

I don’t know what will come from this. But I was happy to hear that this is being prayerfully considered, researched, and discussed by our leaders. It gives me great hope, and fills me with peace.

I would say they just teach the truth the best they can. The history is what it is. The question of “how” implies there is an agenda. But it is interesting that the church even asked the question.

“How” goes beyond content – and it’s just as important, if not more so, than content. Just ask anyone who has had a boring history teacher and a fun, dynamic one.

I really like this – even as I know this sort of group is not new.

I think you have to teach context more than we do. And trying to understand the various possible interpretations of events.
