most nations, today, are eager to facilitate travel and trade rather than continue internecine tribal conflicts.

Amen – and the percentage of nations that want and are seeking peace (and are democratic to a significant degree) probably is higher than at any time in history.

“Rogue states”, now there’s a loaded phrase, like “international community”, which is completely subjective and applied to some states and not to others! Both phrases are used selectively and inconsistently by western media and politicians, and for ulterior motives. And I’ll leave it at that.

    A more balanced personal opinion:

Better: Medicine, space exploration, disaster warnings, disaster relief, literacy, housing. South America and Eastern Europe have improved greatly. Some signs of accountability in Middle East, China and Russia. The position of blacks.

Worse: War, pollution, habitat destruction & extinction, overpopulation, sea levels, drinking water, state & corporate surveillance. Nuclear weapons now in the hands of small countries. Cultural sophistication, sense of place. Employee’s rights.

About the same: Natural disasters, sexism and prejudice (despite what happens in the west), religion (ditto), corruption, public gullibility.

P.s. Ray, I would argue that many so called democratic countries could do with democracy. Sham democracy is rampant in the west. Party donors call the shots not voters. It’s not just Muhammad Karzai who rigs elections either.
