GuestThe following newspaper article reminded me of a scene Fiddler on the Roof” To badly misquote the script: Tevye: “If God took the trouble to come from the other world to tell us about” [His True Church] “all I can say is that it’s for the best. It couldn’t possibly be any better.”
And before she can object he hurriedly tells her: :Amen.”
Golde: “Amen” (Feeling a bit cornered, but unable to offer a better defense)
This recent SL Tribune article gives some interesting history that IMO, the Church’s TBM defenders frequently forget. OT, NT, BofM, D&C, PGP all, repeatedly show the fallibility of the prophets and apostles. Their divine callings do not free them from the foibles of mortality.
LDS history is no different than ancient history in this regard.

GuestThanks for the article. An interesting point is made of the church’s lean towards Republicanism, although I didn’t think the examples given were well thought out, but just mudslinging. But I think this is a good few sentences to consider:
Quote:For faithful Latter-day Saints, however, there’s the added consideration of how to disagree with church authorities who we sustain as God’s servants. Although Romney surely was appalled by the views of Stapley and others, he remained respectful. He politely ignored their uninspired nonsense and followed his own better angels.
The point is that Romney was able to take his political stance, respectfully. So it can be done. I think the church is changing and would encourage more people to be educated and intelligent with their political views.Perhaps there is a way to view the church not as perfect…but that it couldn’t possibly be better…until we progress and it gets better. The mistakes of prophets in the past should be viewed within the constraints of their environment and what they had to work with in their day. And today we need a new prophet with clearer vision.
Politics, however…neither party has a monopoly on the “better way”. I don’t care if 9 of 11 are republican if that is what they believe. I am just grateful my local bishop and leaders step in and correct local members who start thinking we must vote a certain way. I won’t stand for that.

GuestI am almost ashamed of this but I voted for Ross Perot the first time I voted in presidential election. maybe was memorized by those chicken charts I’m was (am) in LA amd the next election was between Edwin Edwards and David Duke. DD was a grand master of the KKK and EE was about to be faced with racketeering charges(mafia connections) He actually said “hold your nose and vote” or Bush Sr would cut federal funds for electing DD. Needless to say E.E. won
Money talks. BS walks. I have been disengaged from thr political process ever since.

GuestQuote:The more recent failed efforts by LDS leaders to defeat legalization of same-sex marriage has likely had the counterproductive effect of accelerating the legalization process while increasing acrimony.
So God
isusing the church leaders (even when they don’t realize it) to fulfill his wishes and legalize gay marriage. Sorry. The former TBM coming out in me. :lolno: -
