I understand the church’s need to spin everything now. With all the troubling info coming out they need to respond. But in the end it is spin because it is just adapting the official story to more closely match the facts. The conclusion still is Joseph was a prophet, he church is true, nothing to see here move along.

It is near impossible to get to the truth of any story when you always retrofit the story to fit your conclusion.

Is it really “spin” when real LDS human beings did the things pictured and written of? Or, what really is wrong with spotlighting activities that might not be common in the church. . . .in the hope that they will become more common by highlighting them? I tend toward cynicism myself, but I’m wondering if I should in this case.

My favorite “positive” observation was from the evangelical BYU grad who appreciated “the emphasis. . . Latter-day saints placed on God’s nearness to humanity.”

My favorite “negative” one was the reminder that LDS shouldn’t “take over” and dominate in interfaith situations. This happens quite a bit in my experience. There’s a project; LDS people get involved; LDS people marshal the LDS troops to “get ‘er done” quickly and efficiently, but it hasn’t really been a group effort.

It’s really difficult to get to the truth of any story, period. That’s true even of things that happened yesterday. Add in time and distance, and almost all that’s left in many cases is a retrofit – even for people who think they are objective. We see the world how we see the world, and it’s really, really, really difficult to believe a story is different than how we naturally see it.
